I'm finally getting to start on the 5 lug conversion on my 86 notch. Just got done completing the rear portion and will be starting on the front end. I came across a few thoughts while doing this. Some were not very clearly answered here and others were never answered.

With the rear end, does anyone know how much gear oil is needed in the rear end? This amount is not in any of my repair manuals, but did take about two bottle plus a 3oz bottle of friction modifier.

Also since I'm about to start on the front and worried that I might be replacing ball joints. How easy it?; anything special to make this easy? any speical tools that I might need?

Last out of curiousity, what size tires is everyone running in the rear? Curious on the widest size I might be able to use in the rear, without having to roll the fenders or modify anything. Right now I have plenty of clearance with 245/45R17 and still have the quads on as well.

Thanks
Benny

well the 245's sound about right you could probably get away with a 255 maybe but i doubt it a 265. The first thing i did when i got my car was junk the quads and make sure the roll the previous owner did was right. I can fit a 275 with no problems, and with a little massaging i can probably do what my friend did and fit a 315.

You can run 255's without rolling the lips and leaving the quads in,but I'd say roll the lips and put an 275 on the rear & you can still retain the quads. I believe the rear end takes 3 full bottles of gear oil. Hope this helps

See I thought that the rear end took 3 full bottles of gear oil, but couldn't find that in my repair manuals and certainly can't remember back when I changed gears and rebuilt the rearend. Mine took only 2 full bottles this go around.

Our rear took 2 bottles and a little friction modifier.
