Here is my 30 year old instrument cluster.

When I ordered my car I wanted gauges. They did not have them until 1979.
I could not afford A/C so it made it easier not having that vent there.
When I put in A/C, I just covered up that vent outlet. So I could keep my gauges.
You don't know how hard it was cutting into that new panel, knowing that if I messed it up, a new one would cost $$$$$
I did have to trim some of the rear dash and speedometer box to make them fit.

You've got to get a meter, or test light and track it down. That is what I had to do, not the most fun thing in the world, oh well.

They were just cheap 2" no-name ones from JC Whitney. The instructions say Equus on them. Except the vacuum gauge. I think the whole set was about $14 back in 1978. I had little money left after paying the $151 a month car payment, and rent and partying.
I was only 22 at the time.

$5436.00 it came with the new car.

Here's the one I made for my Mustang, it's a stock piece w/ a sheet of carbon fiber glued over it. The same thing could probably be applied to a Fairmont dash, and if you wanted to keep a stock look you could find some formica or something with a woodgrain pattern to use. I had to move the small gauges out a little to run the large tach & speedo. That was the whole reason I made an overlay panel.

Thanks, the turn signal/high beam indicator led's are from Radio Shack. They were chrome but I spray painted them silver. You could probably keep the stock ones in the Fairmont dash, from the pic red 78' posted it looks like the Fairmont's factory gauges are a little more spread out than a Mustangs. Because of that it might be a little easier swap in a Fairmont. I had to move the small gauges out about 3/8" per side to get the 5" tach & speedo to fit, that's why I had to make a panel out of carbon fiber to go over the stocker. The small gauges are 2 1/16". If I would have went with the smaller tach & speedo it would have been alot easier & less cutting, but I wanted the big ones. I bought them one or two at a time, but if I had to guess I'd say I have around $450 in them. Because I bought them over time I have some with the old style retainer & some with the new. The old ones were aluminum & the new ones are plastic, neither one seems to be better than the other from what I can tell.
