well before i was just goin to upgrade to 87+brakes and then this morning i was thinkin screw it i will just go 5 lug all the way around. i figured i would make a post because i'm assuming many of you guys out there have done this conversion before. has anyone done this conversion on a 82GT wi TR suspension????will be doing a sn95 5 lug conversion hopefully soon. my 82 front struts are shot like a M**ther so which struts should i get?? and i wouldnt mind anyone helpin out with a list of all the parts i'll need to do it, for the rear i will keep my drums and i guess just swap axles with fox length ones. i plan on running some chrome 5 star 17x9 wheels the ones that kinda look like the cobra R's but have the pony logo in the middle of the center cap. For sure what i know is that i need the spindles, calipers and rotors,sn95 mc and booster. cc plates are the sn95 11" rotors???i also wanna do the ball joints, upgrade the to 89gt rack n pinion, basically re-do the whole front susp so i can get better handling (only for street driving NOT track use) any and all help would be highly appreciated. should the struts and ball joint be ordered for a 94-95 mustang i'm assuming. just that i want to get her painted, and have some nice wheels ready. and i want to drop the car 2"inches also i might add...:tu::tu::tu:

First step on this project is to decide on a wheel. Since you have that done, you need to get the backspacing for those front wheels. This will determine what the best control arm and spindle combo will be for your wheel to prevent wheel rub. If you are running a 17" wheel, then you might as well get the 13" rotors and cobra/pbr calipers for the best braking. You should use the sn95 ball joints if you keep Fox A arms. Struts will be the 87-93 variety, get some good ones to handle the harsh ride from the drop springs. Dropping it more than an 1"-1.5" will require you to worry about bump steer. Steering Rack can be any 87-93 sport style rack.

thanks alot, 13" rotors/pbr calipers huh?? where can i get these? and how much will it cost me? will i still be able to run my turbines in the winter with this larger brake setup? i have decided to stay 4lug. and i plan on using the cobra r chrome wheels 17x8 in front and 17x9 in the rear. most likely 245/45/r17's. i might go with coil overs, new ball joints, 89 a-arms(cause the bushings r newer). will i be ok using a good used rack off a 89gt? i believe its 15:1. how much do the sn95 a-arm ball joints run?? i am really wanting great braking with exceptional handling. i want my 82 to handle like a new ride..will only be a street ride.

Staying 4 lug? Your options just narrowed down drastically. 87-93 V8 front brakes (11") and 93 cobra or 87-88 Turbocoupe rear brakes. Any aftermarket big brake kit to stay 4 lug is a waste IMHO. It sounds like you are after a low-buck alternative? Do some salvage yard scrounging and grab what I have mentioned above

whats wrong with staying 4 lug???i dont think i will be wasting my time ...i alreadt have everything for 87+brakes so i might as well use it right? anything is better than running SUICIDAL 10"brakes my friend... thanks for your input anyway

I meant trying to go larger than 11" fronts (aftermarket) and staying 4 lug is a waste. It costs too much. Sorry if you didn't read it correctly

Do the 5lug conversion, you can get all the parts used if you look on the right sites, you will have so many more wheel and tire options if you do the 5lug conv, plus better braking with the 13's up front and 11.65's outback. Everything kjcobra said is on the money, def do the bumpsteer and an propotioning valve. Make sure you use Fox axles outback so your rear tires dont stick out as much and rub the lips, you will need to roll the lips outback anyway. Depending how low you go you may want to roll the front lips also..

ok well lets say i do the 5lug conversion. with the car lowered lets see 1.5" or 2" whats the biggest set of wheel/tire package would i be able to run without any rubbung issues. just that i dont want to spend over $1000 dollars on wheels that will be rubbin inside the fender well of my 82. thats why ive been hesitant about the conversion. i was thinkin a 17"wheel. but i dont know what size profile tires i would be ok with. i want to add some adjustable coilovers in the mix, guess that would give more flexability. i would like the bigger 13s rotors up front though..

If you use an 17ich wheel, run an 17x8 with an 245/40/17 up front and it wont rub,my 87Notch runs on H&R Road Race Springs and I have no rubbing issues. Some 17x9's might rub the front control arm or the fender extension, but with 17x8's and an 245/40 you wont have any problems. For the rear you can run an 275 tire with no problem,if you use drag radials run Nittos they tend to be a little smaller then other brands.
Heres how that setup looks on my notch,

By the way 99Cobra wheels look killer on 82Gt's and there 17x8's and you can get them used pretty cheap..

upr mentions a bumpsteer kit for the k member coilover kit. what exactly is a bumpsteer kit??? and is it really necessary. def goin 5 lug with the 13" brakes..

You can find them used cheap, but since the FRPP '99 Cobra wheel was discontinued, it may be harder to find them new. They were on sale by many vendors for the last year and a half or so. I bought a set new from a local vendor to eliminate the shipping cost. I think I paid about $95 a wheel for the silver painted ones. The polished ones are still available for about $170 a wheel.

A bumpsteer kit is not needed, its more recomended then anything. But only if you used off-set rack bushings. The off-set rack bushings are MUCH cheaper than a bumpsteer kit. I suggest getting the bushings first, I've seen poly rack bushings going for as cheap as $25. Then do the bumpsteer kit later. When you lower your car, you affect the suspension geometry, sometimes for the worse. The bumpsteer kit and off-set rack bushings bring the geometry to optimal "level" for lowered cars. Check this kit out for "budget" 5-lug conversion: http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/iwwida.pvx?;item?item_no=LRS-4234SN-K%20%20%201&comp=LRS For sure you can get this stuff cheaper from a scrap yard, but not everybody has the time to do that. Plus, this stuff new or remanufactured. Scrap yard stuff may or may not work, and if the rotors have been there for awhile you will have to have them turned.

Thats my 87 notch, the 82 was on E-bay awhile back and I saved the pics cause I liked the look. I've seen 99 Cobra Wheels go for $250-450 with and without tires on the Corral.
