Ok guys. I am really trying to get quality reproduction parts available. One of our projects is a factory correct dahs pad. Based on the E4 production. It will be made like the original with a frame, foam padding and vinyl wrapped. It will be nothing like the current reproduction.
I need to know what you guys would do. I am planning on making them avilable close to the price as the current reproduction dash pad.
Just take a minute to let me know if you would rather use a nice used pad instead of a reproduction, if you bought a current reproduction would you buy a factory correct one to replace it, ect ect.
Keep in mind that the new pads will be made like the originals and have correct colors. Yes even the blue and tan.

Darn! I gave up waiting and just bought a used dash pad like 1hr ago.
Well, I'll probably need one in 6 months if this one cracks like most others.

I'd say a brand new, OEM quality pad for the $189 + s/h that the current pads go for (about 200$ shipped with the FEP discount code) is a smoking deal. I was expecting them to be more like $250-$300 for true OEM quality. That being said, people will still buy mint used dash pads, even if they only save $50-75 dollars.. but those will dry up sooner rather than later. Having OEM quality repops available will be awesome.

As tripice351 stated, there will always be a those who will seek out NOS parts or high quality used pads. Personal preference would be for a original style and quality reproduction pad (in sand beige of course!) I would even be willing to pay more than the current reproduction pad price for correct OEM style reproduction pad - around $250 - as long as they offered OEM style fit and finish. Despite the condition of my current dash pad (cracked) I won't buy the current repo pads even if they were offered in sand beige, just too many quality issues.

Depending on the price, I would rather go new because there is less chance of tabs breaking(or already broke) the foam would be in better shape, and the vinyl wouldn't be faded. I say make them. As was stated earlier, it won't be long before good used ones won't be able to be found.

Matt I got lucky when we bought our parts car, it had a perfect dash pad in it, but as time goes on it will get hard and brittle. Sooner or latter it will break! That will leave us needing 3; one for dads RS, one for my RS, and one for the SVO. So I can safely say that we wont buy the crappy repo that are out there now! If yours as good as NOS you should have no problems finding buyers.... I would like to make a suggestion tho. Put some sort of support in the grill areas so that their not so damb brittle and week....

(Mod please make this a stickie)
Nice used dashpads are almost coming up on non-existant and its not going to get any better. You cant go wrong offering a repro. I personally just like to get my cars looking good enough to drive and enjoy. I hardly ever show any. I have no problems with using a repro.

I agree with the general theme of the responses. I am fortunate that my original dash pad is in good condition (the only cracks are within the perforated area for the speaker-- no major structural cracks) but that could change at any time. If I did need to replace it, I suspect there are exactly zero blue 79 pads that are either in good used condition or NOS. I can't imagine very many which would have had a more pampered life than mine (its first year the car lived outside, then a few years of daily driver duty with garaging overnight, then the rest of its life in a garage under a cover).
I applaud the effort to do the less-common colors; my concern is that there are multiple blues, would each one be done?

As for price, I would not choke at $250-300 if it was a quality piece.

If these are as close to NOS as we are going to get, then I'll take four. I've found few "good" used ones worth what they are asking for them. I'm not trying to restore my cars 100%. Like the others have posted I want a close to stock look, fit, and finish. I have a NOS red dash pad that I might even consider selling to someone doing a total restoration if these are good enough.

If you had one in the dark gray that matched my svo I wouldn't hesitate to pay 250-300. I think this is something that has needed to come out for a while.

I'd go for two or three over time. I've been lucky and found a few good used OEM dashes here lately but they're very fragile and feel like they'll crack easily.
I think if you can get them to look like NOS you'll sell a bunch of them.

Ya the current repro. are junk, poor fit. I would buy one if it looked and fit like the original.

Bingo. It is all about the quality.

I have no problem with reproduced parts as long as they LOOK and FIT like OEM parts. That's the biggest problem with reproductions. They either look wrong, fit wrong or the quality doesn't last. If you're looking to keep the price close to the current pricing of the reproductions, I think you'll hit the Grand Slam! Oh, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a reproduction if the quality was excellent.

I agree with hissing. The only reason I haven't bought a repro for my 85 or 86 is because the current offering sucks.

I have 2 85s both are in need of dash pads. I would be game for at least one maybe 2 (may be able to redye the one from the GT to use in my LX - it's discolored not cracked). I have been on the lookout for a NOS piece because of the substandard current offering. My GT is too nice a car to cut corners on, I have been very pleased with everything I have gotten from you - quality & price!

I have the first generation replacement and I'd buy a better quality replacement pad the moment it became available.

I'm not sure about the generation of the replacement I purchased, but I can say that I bought it about 4-5 years ago and was very excited to spend the money to update my extremely worn original.
Not for long, however. I was immediately very disappointed with the fit and finish after I installed it and would definitely not hesitate for one second to purchase a better rendition. Count me in for sure.

I need a tan one bad! I hate the carpet cover I'm using now and good original tan interior anything is hard enough to find as it is. I don't like the idea of dying or painting one either. Shoot, I'll take two...

Unfortunately, I would like to have a light sand beige. I assume the tan will not match my interior. While you are at it, how about some tan seat belt sleeves (or light sand beige:) )?

While less than $200 is nice, I would spend $250 easily on an 85 tan dash pad that looks and feels like a Ford product. Repros would save all those NOS ones for those who really need them. I have yet to find a spray can to match the tan interior. I'm ready to by a tan one.

I would purchase a grey one today. I've seen some of the reproduction pieces and they looked a bit rough for the money. I'm holding out for something nice and new. Let us know if we will have such luck to purchase a new dash pad.

I dont have the money to buy one, but I would like enough parts to build 4 more Roxannes. It would be nice, if it was exactly like the oem ones, accept with better vinyl that doesn't go vampire when the sun hits it. It would be nice to have paintible ones and other body panels etc. too. With enough support anyay...
How about having the speaker areas reinforced withe a plastic grid?

I'd buy 2
one light gray for the 85 and one stock grey 86 for my 2 GT's
no hesitation at all!

Eventually I will need a good repro. I found a good used but baked black one with no cracks at a wrecker. I put bumper paint on it that had a adhesion promotor and flex agent in the paint. It still may crack someday.

I'd buy a tan one too. Tan anything is hard to find. I don't need it now but the tan stuff I did need was hard to find so I'd buy it just to have it around. Any ideas what colors will be offered?
