Most of the time when an electric pump dies on me, it just quits.

Recently I picked up a 99% stock 86 capri. First time I started it I noticed the fuel pump was louder than normal. Now some of my foxes have always been like this and the pump has been fine for years. However, this weekend I was slowly going up a very large incline, and stopped at the stop sign at the top of the hill.....and...the car died and would not restart. I had about 1/2 of gas...so there should have been plenty of fuel in the tank for the pickup. And hell I have driven up and down that same hill with 3 other foxes with no problems and less gas.

Eventually I rolled it back down the hill at got it to start.

So best I can figure is the pump is so weak that when the angle gets high enough gravity tips the scales of what the pump is able to provide. Filter and pump change will be coming shortly, just curious if anyone as experianced the same symptoms before.

Changing a suspect fuel pump is never a bad idea. Since EFI has gone mainstream in the mid 80's they are coming into their own as one of those wear items.

+1 I would just change it, cheap insurance. Next time it does that check the pressure at the rail and see if the pump is weak.

Hard starting.

I had an 88 Escort GT. I had to cycle the key a lot to "prime" the pump (build up pressure). Eventually it would start.

Years ago my wife had a cavalier and it would stutter from a standing start when the pump started going bad.
