anyone have pics of where they installed there box? PO put battery in back and put the crane ignition in its place ( efi car, driver mount, 5.0) going to put the battery back in front (dangerous, cheap non-vented kit that serves no purpose in a DD) and was lookin for ideas where to place the box. thought about getting rid of the ignition and going stock, but the car ran like crap w/o it ( SD car and it has a tfs 1 cam in it) any ideas?

I put the one in my 82 Capri under the dash on the passenger side. Of course there wasn't anything behind that dash and the solenoid was there too so I don't know how much space there would be in a car with all the HVAC in tact. I mainly put it there because I have previously discovered MSD boxes don't work well when wet. It also kept the engine compartment tidy.

Put it in the cab... it'll last longer when away from heat and water.

I put mine on the pasenger side of the tranny tunnel beside the shifter where I can see it. Was going to leave it under the hood but the malory 6 boxes have the display that lights up:pimp:

For 107$ summits ignition box is a good budget minded update over stock and easy to hook up. Its better sealed then msd boxes; this was one of the main reasons i stayed away from msd stuff.

Does MSD make a distributorless ignition kit with coilpacks and etc.? Think a ignition box could go in the armrest storage area

X2 good idea

I learned the hard way.

The previous owner of my GT placed it where the washer/coolant recovery bottle was. The was the first mistake. Second? Not attaching the large black wire directly to the battery. Combine them both and the box would stall out intermittently. Also the MSD tach adapter worked 50/50. So, I converted it back to stock.

Inside the car is definately the better place. Best to keep it away from water and heat. With that said, this is where mine is mounted....

Yes, I know, the engine bay is a mess.

All the MSDs I have installed were potted. Water should not be a concern.
The last one I installed was inside the strut tower. Yes, it will fit...

It was not for stealthy reasons either. It was because there simply was no more room under the hood ('95 Cobra with Procharger).

I have personally experienced what happens when they get water in them. I had one fail from hosing down the engine compartment. It worked again after it dried out but died again for good a couple weeks later. All the guys I work with race dirt track and have also experienced the same thing from post race washdowns. Normal stuff like rain and the occasional car wash are not an issue but spray it with water and it will get soggy inside...potted or not.:pimp:

What fails on them? Take one apart and see what is going on inside.

Pull the glove box and mount it inside where the box would go, then shut the glove box door!

I mounted mine right next to the right hand side of th eglovebox. A little notch in the glovebox and it functions flawlessly. I like having it hidden that way nobody can touch it, plus it is out of the elements.

I always put the box under the passenger seat. In my 83 capri i have a complete holley anihilator system under it and in the 93 vert i doing now i managed to fit a msd 6 box ,msd boost timing box , and the factory prem sound amp under it . Had to trim the seat braket a lil bit but it all fits . And looks clean couldnt tell the car had one.

heat and water are bad mmmmkay for electronics...

The interesting part about potting electronics (I work in Cat Electronics) is that it's a fine line between too soft and too hard. Ceramic components don't like hard potting. However, to keep everything nice and tight, hard potting would be nice. The other catch is rebuild, although I suspect it's cheaper to flop in a whole new board than to diagnose and rebuild. Boards are cheap...

If you don't care about warranty, take it apart and smear some good RTV around the openings and screws and re-seal the whole thing. Then you could basically mount it anywhere. Duetsche connectors are your friend also...

Another good place for a 6al is in the upper center left of the picture where the Firewall meets the fender, it fits perfectly. Not on the tower, (but it fits good there also) right behind that area closer to the firewall

I had mine on the DS frame rail up until last summer. I then moved it to the passender apron so it was easier to get at ;)
