View Full Version : 1985 LTD (wagon) EFI- T-5 conversion questions.
I’m doing an 5.0 EFI and T-5 conversion on my 1985 LTD wagon so I thought I would post a few questions. For info I am using a 1989 crashed Mustang GT for a donor car. I have the engine and transmission sitting in the car.
Question #1
Obviously, I had to cut a hole in the floor for the shifter but I am having a clearance issue. The top of the T-5 is hitting the transmission tunnel. I am using the Mustang trans mount and trans cross member but it really seems to sit high. Any thoughts?
Question #2
Fuel- As far as I know the 85 LTD 3.8 has an in line fuel pump and an in tank (or am I wrong). I was thinking to go with just the single Mustang style in tank pump and use the Mustang wiring.
If you have done this type of conversion please chime in.
Thanks,
TR

my dad has done a 86 stang 5.0/5-speed into a 78 fairmont wagon and a 89 stang 5.0/aod into a 84 ltd wagon. he did it by using the entire mustang harness swapped into the wagon, and customizing the wiring for the lights. as far as fuel tank stuff, he put the stang pump on the ltd hanger in the ltd tank. it works, but the gas gauge doesnt work. for tranny issues, a possibility is cutting the trans tunnel out of both cars, and swapping them. we are thinking about doing that if we decide to build another wagon. he had no clearance issues on the 84 with aod, but the 78 with the t5 needed some motivation with a big hammer, IIRC.

As far as the trans clearance goes.
I only cut a rectangular hole for the shifter.
All other clearances were fine.

Thanks,
I had the same issue as in that post. I guess I'm just thinking of Fox Mustangs too much...? Thanks.

Hello
Im in the process of converting my 78 Fairmont to 5.0L EFI.
I believe there was a change in the fuel system design sometime during the '85 model year on the LTD CFI 3.8L. The 84-early 85 had both a low pressure in-tank and a high pressure external fuel pump (two fuel pumps) as you describe. The late 85-86 used a single high pressure in-tank pump (like the late model Mustang setup). You will need to look at your car to see which system you have. The external pump would be under the car on the passenger side ahead of the rear wheel.
I could be wrong about the changeover in m]id 85 - perhaps it wasnt until 86 (if at all). Basically even if you have the two pump setup I would eliminate the external pump and replace the in-tank low pressure pump with a high pressure pump. This will NOT affect your fuel guage sender which is part of the pump assembly.

My 85 Cougar only had a pump in the tank. It was a March 85 build.
