View Full Version : Rear End and Control Arm Question

Okay so I finally got everything I need (or so I though) to put the 3.55 geared 8.8 in place of the current 4.10 geared 7.5 to help me out with the bad fuel mileage. It was my intent to just mount the slappers onto the 8.8 but I didn't realize that the slapper mounts were welded to the axle tube. Long story short my rear swap didn't go as intended.
So... I plan to eliminate the slappers completely and put in a good set of upper and lower control arms. What I would like to know is who here is running aftermarket control arms without quads or slappers. I know that wheel hop is a by product when deleting the quads and/or slappers but it's my understanding that is only when using stock control arms.
So for those who are running aftermarket control arms without quads or slappers how is the wheel hop and do you regret eliminating them? What brand name control arms did you choose, and what type of bushings?

I run 3.73s with steeda aluminum lowers with stock uppers and no quads. I have no wheel hop at all, ever. I have gt-40 heads and intake, exhaust etc.... My tires just spin, I have yet to get any wheel hop.

MM non-adjustible lowers - 3-piece poly at the body end; spherical at the axle end. FRPP uppers with stock-type bushings. No hop. However I had bad hop with the stock stuff even with the quads. Car also has SFCs.

Well, I'd just give it a try with the standard SVO control arms and see what you get. The uppers are the same as the FRPP ones and the lowers are the early ones with the small circular bushings and stiffer bushings like the uppers.
For years I ran no quads and the FRPP uppers with some Maximum Motorsports std lowers without issue. I recently installed some Edelbrock uppers for some adjustability.

I haven't noticed much if any increase in NVH since I did my mods. That's with FRPP c/c plates, and my pro3i arms have 3-pc urethane on both ends. Not sure about the spherical bushings on LCAs, but the spherical arrangement in the c/c plates don't seem to transmit anything noticable.

Something I noticed that may or may not be worthy of mentioning. On my former coupe with sub's; no wheel hop with MM drag lowers & stock \ FRPP uppers. On my current 'vert with subs, strut tower brace, MM roll bar, and same control arms; I still have mild wheel hop on the street. I think it has to do with the inherent chassis flexibility of the 'vert. It seems that it may be partially induced by the mild clutch chatter of my kelvar puck type clutch.... It seems to be entirely eliminated now with the additional chassis stiffening work i had done last weekend; time will truely tell IMHO.......

No quads here...no wheel hop either. I currently have Steeda Billet Aluminum weight jacker lowers with solid/Delrin bushings and Steeda Uppers with the same. I used to have the Granatelli weight jackers but they are currently off the car and for sale. http://www.mustangworld.com/forums/images/smilies/lookaround%5B1%5D.gif Slightly used.

My old setup is the granatelli adjustable uppers and weight jacker lowers with quad shocks, no wheel hop..the new setup is the same control arms with solid bushings in the axle housing, jegster upper arm relocation brackets(thats what makes it solid), and no quad shocks.. i dont anticipate any wheel hope, but it sucks to see what n20capri did with is arms, i run the same ones...

I dont want to highjack this thread but i have a couple of Quick questions, do the weight jacker lower control arms make for a rough ride on the street ?
I was thinking MM weight jacker lowers, Ford racing Uppers, stock springs, how do you think the stock spings would be and also what shocks should i run and will i get wheel hop with this set up with no quads, the car will be used for street strip duty ?

The ones I posted above had solid bushings and my new Steeda's have solid/delrin bushings and it's fine on the street.
82Mustang go over yours real well and make sure they look ok. I've read about and seen a lot of pictures of it happening to others...search the Corral and Stangnet for control arm carnage and you'll come across them.

I think that sounds like a nice combo. My dad has Saleen lowers and Edelbrock uppers, stock springs, Lakewood drag struts and no quads and his car hooks nice...no hop.

Thanks for the info Mike. If i go with stock style lowers (non adjustables like your dads) How big of a street tire and slick/drag radial can i run without the fear of hitting the fender lips while normal street driving and hard launches, the reason i ask is because my 85 seems to sit low in the back while my dads Pace car and my previous 84 GT sat quite a bit higher and would have no issues clearing fatter and taller meats, did Ford change the springs in 85 ?

He ran 26 x 11.5 x 15 ET streets with no probs...if he hit a big bump at highway speeds the tire would rub slightly but at the track and normal street driving was fine...
My Capri sat low too that's why I got the weight jacker arms...I have drag springs though...

Ride quality is harsher, but I credit that to the new (stiffer) shocks and springs I put in, not the control arms.
