Today I was cleaning up my wiring harness and doing some retaping on my 85 and I noticed that most of the original tape was plastic, but at some points it was the cloth type electrical tape. All of the cloth type joints are crumbling and I would like to replace with plastic. Is there a reason they used cloth at some points?

Thanks for the tip. Do you know if I can get it some where in a smaller roll?

What is the problem with electrical tape?

Advanced auto parts sells it for $8.00 a roll (8ft I think)

whats so special about the wire tape? i normally use electrical black tape and sometimes cover it with that ribbed plastic conduit..if that special tape makes the difference i'll have to start looking for some, my whole harness will be gone through before being thrown in the notch

Regular electrical tape with the adhesive, doesn't age too well. For some reason, the adhesive gets runny and the tape unravels especially under the hood or dash where temps can get pretty hot. This has been my experience.

same here, any contact with oil or just under the hood sometimes it will start to unravel off the wiring..i usually rip off the loose end and look the other way..Thanks for the info i'll look for some of that tape
