The best cork ones I used were the fel-pro with the metal inserts. The best all around gaskets were the metal with a rubber seal on either side, these were factory on 86-93 mustangs with the factory aluminum valve covers. They can also be found on mark 7s. To use them with steel covers you will have to modify the lips, but they don't leak and are reuseable.

looks at some felpro gaskets. i just changed the valve covers on my jeep and my nissan frontier. both sets where nice rubber with brass inserts.

For the steel covers the regular cork ones still work pretty darn good. I've had about a 60% success rate with rubber gaskets. 95% with cork.

+1. FelPro blue-stripe cork. The thicker ones. Best gasket I've found for steel covers.
I use 'em with aluminum covers too. They look old-school, but they work. Whatever
FelPro is mixing in with the cork these days, it's good stuff.

I have some fel-pro ones that have rubber on the outside and a metal piece on the inside, they are very nice and dont leak

I'm not sure if the felpro perma dry plus work on steel valve covers but they are reusable and last forever. I've reused mine about 20 times and have yet to have a leak.

I dont see why perma-dry pus wouldnt work on steel covers, i used one on my oil pan.

If you use them, shop around. I think at advance they were $50, auto zone was $35 or so.

I've used both cork and the fancy rubber impregnated metal reuseable gaskets. I was able to reuse the cork gaskets 3 times, they stuck to the valvecovers. After that I bought the reuseable kind from a Ford dealer.

If you don't plan on taking your valvecovers off often (hydro cam stuff) the $10 cork gaskets are fine. If you're running a solid cam, definitely spend the $50 on the reusable ones.

i bought straight rubber ones at the parts store for like 8.00 and they seal perfectly to my aftermarket cast aluminum VC's..the only downside is it takes some time to move the gasket around and line up the holes as you go..i really should have bought the rubber ones with the steel insert because it's a pain to line up every hole. They would be fine if you only pulled them off a few times a year, but in the 6 months or so since i built the 351w i swear i've had em off 50 times..only to find out the knock that sounded like a lifter/roller rocker is a bad rod bearing
