Hello I have a stock 86 and was thinking about swapping out the stock e6's for some thumper e7's a cobra upper and lower and a steeda cam with 220-226 degrees at .050 and .480 lift with a 115 LS.. Does this combo sound doable? The cam is # 19 .. I know the duration and ls is critical on the SD and being a 86 block so is lift.... Any advice would be appreciated....

Nope. Not without notching pistons. Just the E7s are a hit or miss....

+1 I had to notch my pistons.

thats a bummer... I know the stock cam is .444 lift and was just hoping the steeda cam at .480 lift would still give me enough clearance.. Back to square one I guess...

thanks for the insight though....

It's not so much about the lift as it is about the duration, sure lift plays a part but this is a huge misconception that gets past around until it's fact and then what's worse, common knowledge. Duration plays a bigger part because it determines how long the valve hangs open. So in short, overlap is the nastier of the two evils.

The valve events are everything. What is stated above is correct. The lift is not as big of a picture as the duration and the valve events in general (when the valves open and closes).... Rather notch the pistons or get an 87 + block. Personally, if the block is in good shape, I would get notch the pistons - that way you can go as big as you want and not be worried on the limits from the 87 + block.... You could shave the heads pretty good to gain compression back and still run a good cam....

Get em notched, not very hard to do and most shops can even do it with the block in the car. That sounds like a pretty nice set up, I think if the comp doesnt get stupid it would run like a raped ape. I really like the #19 cam, it's a fantastic design!! Drives like stock but has great torque and a super powerband, never run it with SD though.... I'd love to see/hear how it runs for you!
