I have a 1983 glx that came efrom factory with a premium am/fm cassette.I got the car without the stereo and am trying to locate a factory radio.I have purchased two different 83-83 factory cassette decks even one stated for mustang/capri only yet the trim plate won't go over the front of the radio as it is too small an opening. How can I tell difference in future or is there a different trim plate for the cassette radio?
Thanks

Any 79-84 radio should fit the hole, you have been getting the wrong radios or you dash has been modified somehow. A picture of radios and dash would help alot.

Is it possible your originally had an AM/FM without cassette? According to my door sticker, my car had that and it has premium sound.

Doesnt matter, they all will fit 79-84 dash, amfm, cassette or premium sound.

OK, I just found some pictures of factory radios. http://www.ascmclarencoupe.com/Literature/Brochures/79MercuryCapriBrochure_12-13.jpg Is the trim plate even supposed to fit over the radio or just against it. Looks like the latter to me but I would have to look at my 81 when I get home to be sure.

Against it, the radio comes in from the back and the plate goes on the front.

Thats my issue then. I thought the trim plate was supposed to go over it not against it. Mine fits against it.
Thanks for all your help.

If I remember, the factory radio is a VERY tight fit., but removng the console will get you a little extra room to manuver..
