Working on getting some suspension and frame stiffening right now but my next move is to go with some better heads. I am no baller so I need some heads that will work with my little 306 now but i can grow into later when i do a 331. I was thinking maybe afr 165/185 or a set of twisted wedge. Don't need anything real crazy just want a good reliable street and track car that can run mid to low 11's with spray.. let me know what you guys would do. Also if you are running any of these what combo and times are you running with them??

Hard to beat the AFR's, 165's would be great on a 306, 185's on the 331.

165's work great on 302 motors. They are a bit small for the 331. The 185's on a 331 with the right cam, compression, intake and exhaust system will run mid to low 11's on motor. Maybe high 10's if the car is set up correctly. After that then you can put the juice to her.

I like the AFR's. My freind has them on his 91 coupe with a 306 DDS block and it is fast.

world jr 180's. I like them cause they under rated, cheap, designed by roush and they can be ported to flow big #'s

Look into some TEA or Anderson Ported TrickFlows.
If you insist on AFR, I'd still go with 185's. I've seen cases where 185's were better performers even on the smaller engine. 1)185 isn't that "BIG" of a head and 2)there is no point in doing it twice.

AFR 185's. If I had the cash...

Twisted Wedge user here, I have no complaints about them. They worked great on my 306 that I was running and I'll be using them again on my 347 that is being built except with Anderson high-rev springs instead of the stockers. Last I checked, the TFS heads were cheaper than AFR also.

AFR 165's and a custom FTI cam to match the combo. Then watch out!!!

It all comes down to the cam, get the 185s but you WILL have to buy two cams. Just get a solid off the shelf cam for the 306, but when you go 331 get a custom grind. It is well worth the money! The 185 isn't a huge head, and has excellent flow throughout the range AND good velocity for the port size. The beauty is that you can run it with a smaller duration cam now and still be able to take advantage of the high lift flow #s.

I do not know about the AFR; but you DO NOT have to have the pistons cut to run with the Trick Flows as long as you keep lift under like .550".
I have the TFS Twisted Wedge heads on my 306 and I cannot say enough good things about them.

Depends on the cam, but it's a good idea to flycut them anyway. I am suggesting the AFR 185s. Best head for the money, all around.
