View Full Version : People who lie about their cars

There's one in every bunch. I bought an 86 GT last June, and am in the process of building the engine and interior up.
The guy who I bought the car from said he bought it from a guy who did a bunch of work to it. The ad read Flowmaster exhaust, H pipe, ported upper and lower intake, 70mm throttle body, headers, underdrive pulleys, 3g alternator, King cobra clutch, MSD ignition, 16" pony wheels, Koni struts, Ford motorsport springs, short throw shifter, 79,000 miles never wrecked, or smoked in.
The guy sends me multiple pics, the car looks great. I can't verify everything he says, and some things are hard to check. I get the car home and find:
Dynomax exhaust, not flowmaster, with small rusty hole in one muffler
MSD cap and rotor, stock ignition otherwise
cigarette but under drivers seat and the "smell" in the carpet/upholstery
KYB struts, stock E5ZZ springs
unbolt the intake to find the stock upper and lower ports I can barely stick my thumb into.
Now, I know I could have backed out of the deal, but I agreed to buy the car as is, and these thing aren't really that big of a deal. If the car was wrecked, or much farther off than it was I would have backed out. It made the 1100 mile drive home after buying it as well, so I can't complain that much.
But... why must people brag/list/tell others what their car doesn't have? I don't understand why you would say the car has this stuff when it doesn't? I guess it makes them feel better to say, yeah, I've got this and that.... when you can't see the parts. ... Yeah, my motor has Carillo rods, forged pistons, a girdle, 347 stroker, 1150 dominator, 1 3/4" headers, 4" exhaust, etc. etc.... Which really means it is internally stock with a loud exhaust, yellow accel wires, painted valve covers, and a/c delete!:rolleyes:

Ricer mentality kinda thing I think. Or to try and brag about how badass of a wrench turner they are? I dunno.
I know I wouldn't list everything I've got done. Too many small things.

I hear ya.
I love how it seems that no northern vehicles are ever driven in the rain or snow.
Frequently the ads read, "never driven in rain or snow" ---- so these people ALL either have multiple cars or they have other transportation on inclement days. Okay, I can accept it.
I asked one seller about it who responded, "Yeah, I have never driven it in the rain or snow." I then asked, "How long have you had it?" to which he responded, "Six months." So what he is really saying is that, in the cars 40-year life, he can attest that it has "never been driven in rain or snow" for about six months out of 40 years.
So, again, I hear ya.

What's funny, is that is a deal breaker in my book. I want an unmodified engine :D

i guess that is a good thing to not want unmodded engines, atleast from ppl you dont know. you dont know what retard was meesing round in the engine. some dope head trying to put things back together and messes it up. now if it were a friend who I knew he knew what he was doing thats completely different that is unless you wwanted stock for the sake of it being stock.

i sure wish i was the kind of guy to want stock and original. i would actually have money in my pocket............buuuuuut, i like modified. love it actually.
one thing i HATE, is when you ask a ricer what he has done to his car and they say "intake, and exhaust" intake really means *cheap autozone intake to air cleaner TUBE with cone style filter* exhaust means *fart can attached to the stock exhaust tubing with exhaust clamps or horrible welds*

The best part is that most of them only know enough about cams to go by the Ford alphabet cams....and they'll say something like "yeah it's a small cam, i don't think it's an E303, probably a B303" thinking that a B must be smaller than an E since the X is much bigger, so it should lope less and sound more stock right? Too bad the B lopes more than the E.

I'm actually the "Ford" minority at work. Everyone else is either Ricer or G.M. It's funny to me that all the cars they used to own, always made more power and are faster than anything I've owned (or own). I've even brought in a dyno sheet & time slip. They usually come up with some excuse about how they can't find theirs or lost it. How convenient!
When I drive one of my cars to work, they always say "too bad I don't still have
my ______! I would have blown your doors off!" Most people have to be bigger and badder, but can't prove it!

I would love to know long ago the term "buyer beware" was originally coined....... Probably ever since the invention of coin IMHO..... Personally & morally; I always tell it like it is.....

"fresh 306, forged pistons, E cam (nice lope!), ported heads with bigger valves, ported intake"
Means..
"Stock with EGR problem"
I bought my vert with a "B303 cam" and it was studdering nasty and missing at low RPMS, I re-ran the vacuum from the TAB meter instead of straight manifold vacuum... Whaddya know? Smoothest idling B cam Ive ever heard...

Most ads have ricer math - this mod adds this, that one adds this... so I have a CAI and exhaust and turn 5 gazillion horsepower.
When I bought the convertible I was told it had an RHO in it and didn't believe it. Turns out the guy I bought mine from was on the money on everything he told me. You really never know.

Oh so true or they always know someone who has a faster car than yours. Interesting because I know many people who have faster cars than me too. Except for my stock 86 convertible that runs high 10's in the quarter but I don't wanna show you right now cause .....ummmmm............my........ummmmm........oh yeah my clutch is slipping

It's simple Why they BS you....They are making the car seem more valuable. I had the same thing happen not too long ago. I found a 351 windsor for sale on eBay. The ad stated that it had forged TRW pistons/comp cam/Edelbrock Intake, and a fresh rebuild. Well, low and behold when I tore the motor down, what did I find??? Hypereutectic pistons, and a .030 under crank that was scored. The seller blatently lied about the pistons...Oh well, like the saying goes buyer beware.

i used to know 2 guys like this. one had a supposed 14 sec 1970's F-150 that got 6 carlengths pulled on it by a 86 mustang that ran a BEST of 15.2.
2nd guy claimed to have a built up 350 in his chevy pickup 1/2 ton, my cousin owns a shop and was working on it. it really had a 302 in it with 350 chevy stickers on the valve covers. and he had his timing retarded for gas mileage!! haha

when I bought my mustang I was new to the 5.0 ho engine and had no idea what they could or could'nt do . well the guy I bought it from realy filled me full of s---! he told me it made over 450 hp had 410 rears. of course it wasn't insured so we couldn' go far to realy open it up. to make a long story short I bought the car , brought it home and did some research. searching the web and joining forums and asking questions. this is what I bought. an 83 hatch with a stock 5.0 ho and 273 rears boy did I feel stupid. Ive never seen the guy since but if I ever do I'll offer to sell him the swamp land I own in arizona!! buyer beware and do your research before you buy.
