I read an article that said the best years to swap to a 5 bolt setup was 94-95,why is this?

Basically, the 94-95 spindles come the closest to stock track width. The 96-98 push the wheels out farther (but they do work).

How much of a differance is there?

Supposedly the 96-2004 spindles push the wheels out 8 MM per side. That's .315 inches for us non-metric people.

And also the 94-95 knuckle has the steering arm pointed inward so you can use your stock tie-rods. The 96 and up require longer inner tie-rods since the arm is tucked outward towards the wheel.

Do a quick search for complete brake swap that was just posted about a month or so ago. Great information in there and it acctually has pictures of the differences in the two. I would do the search for you but i'm always in a hurry to check the AM posts before work gets kicked in to much :)

Another difference between the 94-95 and the 96+ is the elevation of the tie rod attachment. The 96+ mount point is 1" lower to coencide with the lowering of the steering rack on the K-member to allow for the 4.6 to fit.
The 94-95's are closer to the Fox in this respect, and thus you have less bump-steer issues.

Here is pretty much all you need to know on the issue...

I'll be doin the 5lug swap in my 84 vert. Using 94-95 spindles and rear end. Two things I'm doing that are not in that write are: I'll be using 04 cobra a-arms up front, and 03-04 mach 1 tokico struts, shocks and springs. I'm using these to help clearance my 18x9 wheels(24mm offset front and 36mm rear) and 255/35 tires. I've talked with other people who run this setup and they said it helps with clearance issuses when running 17x9 and larger wheels.

I see a couple of areas you may have problems with on your 84 Fox. The Cobra arms will move your front wheels out 1.22" per side, without any other mods this may give you problems with fender clearance. If you have not purchased your wheels yet you may want to get just the rears first with th 36 MM offset and try those on the front and see how they fit. The Mach I struts may not have enough travel especially if you lower the car, they are taller than Fox struts. I am doing a similar conversion on my car, 95 Spindles, Cobra front arms and 95 rear axle. I am thinking about using S197 wheels with their greater offset.
