Ultra rare because they didn't exist. I found this at a classic car dealership. It has a 6 cyl 5spd combo(not factory). You can't tell too much in the photos, but the top doesn't seal well at all. There was standing water in the console below the e-brake handle. I just hope that whoever did the conversion didn't use a T-top Coupe. Enjoy....or not.

Merkurs had that same shift pattern and those used the Euro T9 (Hummer) 5-speed. That tranny was based on the old Pinto 4-speed IIRC.

I didn't ask. I guess that I should of. I figured if I asked he would say something stupid like 6000 or so. I provided the number above, I probably won't be going back down there too soon. It's like 1 hour 15 mins for me. I got a business card, Marlin Love cell phone is 256-550-1926.

Ultra rare or not, those early conversions don't seem to command top dollar. I have seen a few that were far nicer than that one that the seller almost couldn't give away. They are interesting but definitely not engineering marvels:cool:

OMG, DOBI

Dobi made it.

That thing is 1980 gangster, ultra proud of the 5 speed, Dobi rear panel, chopped in ragtop. Definitely great pics for the archives.

My m81 mclaren has one. Also that was the factory 5 speed for the 80 models. They didnt last long because of the crazy shift pattern.

I had one of those 5 speeds in my turbo conversion car. It took a LOT of abuse before my then future wife ripped first gear out of it. (Should have taken that as a warning.:p)

I honestly liked that transmission. All aluminum, and about as big as loaf of bread, it couldn't have weighed 50lbs, with a super stout 4.08 to 1 first gear, if I remember right. Definitely over 4.00 to 1.

I got used to the shift pattern. 1st thru 4th are the hot rod gears anyway.
5th is for the freeway.

We had a thread going about those a good while back.

In the early 80s, you could buy those out of the Sears or JCPenney catalog.
