i use regular ATF, i dont think being type F(fords only) would matter, i'm not sure what the differences are and if it's ok to use it in a T5 or not, but i'd like to know

I was using type f in the slush boxes of the 81's,and I was talking to a buddy who runs the service department for the local Ford dealership and knows my cars and he was saying to use that mercon/dexron III in the 81's trannys, not type f.
If you're not sure, check it out,'cause I've always used dexron11 in the trannys.

Your tranny dip stick should be marked with the proper fluid. NEVER use Mercon/Dexron in a tranny designed for Type F. You will burn out the bands in short order.

As far as power steering, I always use either Type F or Type FA.

If you have the trans rebuilt though, ask the rebuilder what to use. My '78 Fairmont wagon seems happy running the newer Dextron III.

The AOD in my '89 is another story but I think it's because it's a stock AOD.

Mercon V is good stuff. I wouldn't hesitate to use it in any AOD, as Jerry Wroblewski hisownself
recommends it. Jerry was one of the chief designers of the AOD family transmisssions. He's
somewhat of a godlike figure amonst the MN12 and Marauder communities.

As for the C4, unless you know your C4 was specifically reworked to use Dexron (no 't' please),
don't do it. I personally don't see why anyone would want to make such a conversion, but that's
dredging up a discussion we've already had.

I will point out though, Type F is a better fluid than Dexron for non-OD GM transmissions, such as the
TH350 and TH400. Indeed, for years, B&M Trick Shift was little more than Type F with a different dye...

Thanks Fellas,Mercon V looks like what we're going to be using.
"preciate the info.

Type F is "harder" fluid than Dexron. I can see why it would make the GM trannys better.

Dexron was developed for a very smooth shifting transmission, and the trannys that use it have special servos. As JA Cook said, do not use it unless your tranny was either designed for it or reworked for it. It does not have enough hydraulic energy (for want of a better term) to be used in trannys designed for Type F, and will not operate the servos to full capacity. Thus, the bands slip and burn out.

I use whatever ATF the trans requires. For my 81, it would be type F, but I took the PS pump off...
