Do you know if the guage bezel will bolt into a Fairmont dash without issue?

IIRC, you are correct. The '79s had the interior door handle down low ---- and then it went up near the top on the '80s.

I have no idea. I've never owned a Fairmont to try it. Maybe as in the maintenance forum and see??

Philip, surprised you haven't tried this already...

Even though the dash parts are almost always described as being fully interchangable between Mustangs and Fairmonts, there is a minor issue, but not a very important one.

Just as the dash pads are different between Fairmonts and Mustangs, with the Mustangs having the ridge across the top over the cluster as well as a squarer profile, they're a little different on the underside where the pad meeds the bezel as well.

The Fairmont bezel has round corners at the top, where the Mustang bezel's top corners are relatively square, with sharp corners.

The height of both bezels from the bottom to the top as measured at the flange that screws into the pad are the same. Thus, the corners of the Mustang bezel will dig into the round radiused corners of the underside of the Fairmont dash pad a bit as you push the bezel into place.

Also, there's a sort of a "step" in the Mustang bezel, where it transitions from the screw-flange-part at the top to the last couple of inches at either side. This results in a bit of a "reveal" where you can see part of the dash pad that would ordinarily be hidden by the Fairmont bezel.

It's not really a big deal, since you can't really see any of this from the driver's seat (unless you're really short) and no one else is going to be close enough to spot it. If you look carefully at this photo of my dash, you can sort of see what I'm talkign about, especially at the upper right hand corner:
