I tried to search for "Carb to EFI swap". The search feature does not like the word "to" or the word "EFI" as they are not 4 letters long.

That's common to vBulletin. Search criteria has to be four letters or longer. There may be a patch or a fix for that but I don't know.

It's some stupid thing that vB insists on doing in order to supposedly make it easier on itself somehow. The way around it would be:

carb efi* swap I'd leave out 'to' entirely as it's too short AND it's just an unnecessary little word (typically, search engines like Google ignore stuff like AND, TO, etc.). Adding * on any 3 letter word/abbreviation, either to the front or the back of the term should make the search feature happy.

Doesn't seem to be working. Did it get turned off?

Fulltext might be overriding it.

I've added a bunch of 2-3 character terms that should be common around here. Hopefully that'll make some difference.

Not being able to find "NOS", "OIL" and "GAS" is really starting to annoy me. Don't know if those were added yet, but its annoying as all get out.

Can we somehow get google to be the default search?

Yeah, those three were added.

We're upgrading the board very soon, there may well be a solution in there. If not, perhaps adding Google search as an option, but not necessarily default.

The thread tagging feature may be helpful with this issue. Tags can be searched, so once we start getting appropriate threads tagged properly, that can be an option for hunting down shorter terms.

I tried the three letter searches with this new software and it doesn't work.

The tagging is something of an option I suppose.

I'm going to see if I can't light a fire under people to start tagging. In the meantime, you should be able to tag any threads you come across that you find are 3 character or less oriented.

We are against a limitation of the database server. It cannot correctly handle FullText with short search strings. It is a trade off, we can switch search engines, but it will slow search times to a crawl.

Wow I didn't; mean to get some huge deal started. I just thought if I was having the problem others might also. I just thought the 3 letter searches might make the board more user friendly. I am having less issues with PHPbb, you guys think of using that or are their other reasons why you don't?

Bwaaahahahahahaha Clearly I hope you jest with a comment like that. We outgrew phpBB YEARS ago. phpBB has many many flaws which make running a board of this size an absolutely nightmare from an administrative perspective. I won't even go into the plethora of security problems it has.

phpBB just required more babysitting than it was worth, which is why we transitioned to vB in the first place.

If you have any thoughts on how to make vB work better for you, and the other members of the site (other than 3 char searching.. as thats a mySQL issue..) please email me directly at ThatGuy [_at_] foureyedpride.com.

I don't doubt what you have said to be true as you are the expert and I am not. Sounds like I have been lucky with phpBB so far. Any sites on where I can read about what you have said you don;t want to get into. (the plethora of security problems) I want to see if there are still some things I need to patch up and fix.
