View Full Version : New 79-81 Cobra Registry coming....

As we speak, BevoBo50 (my buddy in Austin with the gold '80 turbo) are designing a new registry for the '79-81 Cobras. This is not meant in anyway to compete with the current '79 registry, we started this because we wanted to compile some numbers and start getting the '80-81s figured out. We didn't feel that we could make a registry for the 80-81s without including the 79s. The overall format of the webpage is designed, the main page is done, as well as some of the other basics.
The point of my post here is to ask for any suggestions people have, things that people might like to see, and most importantly any information that anyone can offer on the history of these cars. The history on the '79s seems to be a little more concrete than that of the '80s and '81s, so I'm asking for any concrete information that people would like to share. Please reply here, or contact me via PM and I will give out my email address. I cannot promise that if something is asked for that it will be included, but we will do our best to make this registry something that everyone will find resourceful and enjoyable.
As of right now we will have a history page, a page that will have the actual registry on it and allow people to submit new cars, a photo gallery, a classifieds section, a page on decoding, and a message board when funds allow us to purchase vbulliten or whatever program we want to run it.
The actual registry file is put together right now, I have 4 or so cars listed in it and it looks great. I need to start adding cars, getting suggestions for other information that people would like to see included.
So, here is what I need. Anyone with a '79-81 Cobra, I would like to get this information:
Door tag (most important) - This is where we will be able to get the most hard information, and develop some statistics that should be interesting
VIN (the registry will be organized by VIN, so that the cars are listed in order of the sequence in which they were built. The last 6 of the VIN will not be availible to the public. If this is a concern, contact me and we will figure something out)
Current owner/State/City
Any mods done to the car/pictures. Each car will have a dedicated gallery page, and any information/history/mods sent in about the car will be added with the pictures.
Questions or concerns, please email me. BuickGS455@gmail.com

Hey guys this is Bo who is working with Chris (02Z06) to put together the 79-81 cobra registry. We are really interested in figuring out the story behind these cars and getting a firm grasp on what could and was ordered from the factory. These cobras are a pretty interesting part of the mustangs past and we need anyone who is willing to help in gathering information and cars for the registry. If you have any information at all about these cars that you would like to share please feel free to send it over to Chris or to me (boguilbeaux@gmail.com). Also if you own a 79-81 cobra send us over the information Chris asked for above so we can begin to figure out approximately what percent of cars were ordered with what and other stats. If you know of anyone that owns a 79-81 cobra tell them about this registry and get them to send us that info. This site is going to be really cool if we get some help from other cobra owners and knowledgeable mustang enthusiasts.
Thanks Guys!!!:D

Thanks foxchassis, it looks like this is the 2nd or 3rd time someone has attempted this, so I imagine people are getting burned out on trying. Well, our website is actually completely designed and fully functional, we just have not loaded it up yet because no one likes it when "this site is under construction." So we are waiting until it is completely ready to make it fly.
Right now I really just need cars for the registry, and people to send pictures for the gallery pages. I've emailed some of you who do have cobra's, and anyone I have not contacted please contact me here because WE NEED YOUR CAR!
I know you guys are out there, lets get together and make this thing happen!

Chris,
It's looking good so far. I have a keen interest in the '80-'81 Cobras because I don't have one. Also, it's tough to find pictures of nice looking ones that aren't beat upon. I'll be checking out the site very often. Good luck with it!

Getting close guys, I'll keep yall posted... I don't want to launch it to the masses with a bunch of "under construction" pages... but we are getting close. Thanks to some very generous fellow FEP patron's, the photo gallery will have without a doubt the best '80-81 Cobra gallery on the net. And with some help from you guys will eventually be the biggest registry and information resource.
We hope to use this information and networking to eventually help get some reproduction parts made for these cars... This is only the beginning.
I need more people to register!!! Any '79-81 Cobra owners who have not chimed in please do so!
Thanks

Just wanted to bring this up to the top, I'd like to get as many cars registered as possible and I know there are still tons out there that we haven't yet. So, just wanted to bring it back up and encourage everyone to visit, make comments, suggestions, etc and if you've got a cobra it's a great way to get some pictures put up online, show off your car and maybe learn a little about them or decode your car. We are still working on a few areas on the website, but the gallaries are good size and there are tons of cool cars on there!

I'm working on as much information about the Cobra Option, and what was included in the package and was optional, engine codes, interior codes, etc., etc. I've just about got '79 done. It's just getting crazy at home.....

Thanks, I sure appreciate it. I found an interesting cobra a couple of days ago. It is an 81 with a no-console interior. Its a V8/auto car, but the no console thing really caught me by surprise. Think this was possible? I have not gotten the bucktag info yet, and the car is way to expensive for the shape it is in... but it looks like a real cobra and I'd have to guess that if its legit it's one of a few w/o console.

The dealer brochure says the console was optional in all models, standard in none. Keep in mind that the Cobra was not a model but rather an option package with the base (non-Ghia) three-door hatchback. The standard features with the Cobra option does not list the console.

Steve, I never even noticed that your car was console delete! Very cool, and x2 on the awesome interior comment!

It isn't a technically a "console delete". It was just never optioned with one.
Same would go for AC, power windows, power locks, rear defrost, cruise control , etc. If your car doesn't have those they weren't "deleted". They were just never ordered.
It's different from something that is standard, like an AM radio, that could be deleted. Then it would be a radio delete.

You're absolutely right, I had just gotten used to saying it! Too cool though, I love the no console look.

Awe shucks. I'm blushing.
Hey Foxchassis, "console delete" just sounds better than "the chick who ordered it was too cheap to pay for a console!"

I must say, having had 3 other four-eyed 'Stangs with consoles, having no console is very cool. Much cleaner look, less rattles, and a more race ready feeling. Best of all, no dummy lights!

Your white/red interior is really cool. How do you manage to keep the seats so clean?
By the way, $140 in 1979 dollars equates to about $420 today. It is interesting to me that the various interior and/or comfort-related optional items on today's Mustang are in this same price range (Interior Upgrade Package, $460; Comfort Group, $575; Premier Trim Package, $395; Ambient Lighting, $295).
