Hello,

I'm trying to pick up an '80 Cobra I found and I'm just curious of the production numbers & rarity of the car. Any help is appreciated.

Cobra package production numbers are not known at this time.

While production numbers are not know, it is certain that the cars are pretty rare. I've seen way more pace cars than cobras which leads me to believe that the production was significantly below 10,000 for all three years. Much of the problem with the cobras was the fact that most of them came with the carbed turbo-4. I think alot of them saw the scrapyard prematurely.

It would definitly be a car worth getting if the price is fair and it is solid. If you want to post some pics of the car we may be able to give you some pointers.

Here's one that shows the overall condition of the car. Its pretty much rust-free, but I worry about the floor. Minor dents and scratches, and it needs a new nose. Paint appears to be original. The interior confuses me though. I thought Cobras had nicer interiors or was that an option? I have a lot of questions on this car not having ever really looked at too many Cobras. It even has the TRX wheels and original ties in the hatch area!

I'd love to have it, I really like that color.

Ron, welcome to the site... I've seen your car & read some of your posts over at the SSP site (my room mate has a 90 SSP that I'm trying to find info on).

Well she's a little rough around the edges but worth looking into.

You're going to want to check the floors real good and also the frame rails from the car sitting in the grass.

The recaro interiors were optional on these cars like all mustangs back then. Of all the cobras I have seen there were only a few sporting the recaro interior.

It looks like it was repainted at some point but that is an interesting color if it is original.

Thanks. What does your roomie have? What agency? Does he/she have a forum ID on the site?

It’s been sitting for a few years. I wasn’t able to get under the car when I took the pics. I looked at a 92 I found a couple weeks ago that has been sitting since 2002 and the floors look great, so I hope this car is not too bad with our super Indiana weather….
I have the seats out of an ’85 GT that I’ll probably put into it for now. I like the feel of them and my wife is more about comfort and style before originality. She went with me to the 30th show in my SSP and politely let me know how much she disliked its seats!
The paint appears to be original, just faded real bad. It’s the same color (minus the fading of course) under the hood, in the door jambs and hatch area.

Hmmm.... I really don't know if that is an orginalk cobra or not. What leads you to believe it is? Emblems, graphics, VIN, etc? While the body looks right, I thought they all came with a vinyl decal package. I've got some pics of my 81 Cobra before I started the resto that I'll post tonight for comparison.

Its a 90, was an AOD car (we've changed that!!) DSO tag reads..GOVT special service (no help) Door tag reads.. DSO 830117 Nothing really spectacular options wise, Its the light blue (I forget the name now), light blue interior, non-painted 10 holes (since changed to freshly redone white powdercoated pony's), with the engine upgrades done last spring it had to get a cowl (sux) hood. he also replaced the rusting decklid with a glass one. Had them both painted to match the body, then added white stripes. The car is currently in the garage getting rear end (powertrax/axles/all new brakes/completely new suspension etc... It should be done by spring again.. if he'll leave it alone!!! We both wish it hadn't needed the hood!! It would've been nice to keep it stock looking!! He doesn't have an ID over at the site, I was thinking of getting one just for the reference parts. Up until 2 years ago he also had a 99 Crown PI from one of the local PD's. Great riding car, fast too!! Just didn't feel like it had any balls!! It was traded for a brand new '03 Cobra 'vert that was sitting on the lot for over a year!! Great deal too!!

Oh, forgot to mention, if the car is a real cobra it will either have the word "cobra" or "cbr" stamped into the buck-tag on the core support.

Also the reason why I thought it was repainted was because it was missing the side stripes. The hood graphics were optional but they all had the side stripes.

*Edit* Now that I look close in the pics I can actually see the side stripes. They are almost the same color as the paint. I think that thing is the real deal.

It’s got the stripes & emblems on it. That and the owner says it’s in original condition. I'd like to see some picsd of yours. Any Cobra pics right now would be good

You both should join. It would be helpful identifying his car.

That’s another thing I haven’t had to to look at yet. I popped the hood once to check for a repaint and saw the original motor was gone! I’ll go back when it quits raining to look at it again.
