View Full Version : Is this an SVO computer??

I got an engine harness and computer for my '86 SVO from someone who told me they were from an SVO.

The harness looks nothing like the one on my '85.

The part number on the computer is E5ZF-12A650-J1A. It also says EFI-TC3 on it.

So what do I have here?

After checking the harness and comparing it to pictures of something like an N/A 4cyl EFI harness I think that is what I have.

I think I got screwed.

Cool thanks for the link.

According to that the part number comes up as being from an '85 SVO which is what he told me it was from.

Now I'm just confused about the harness. It doesnt even have any provisions for the VAM in it and the part that plugs into the boost controller is on the complete wrong side of the harness by where it connects to the starter solenoid. Me confused...

I'll have to post some pics of the harness tomorrow so someone can tell me what the hell I have.

Well, the computer is an SVO computer as you figured out, but its also an early one. That also pretty much says the harness is an early one. The boost control stuff should look like a dura spark box or atleast the plugs for one if its not there.

OK now what harness do you think this is?

I am of the opinion that it is from something like an N/A EFI 4cyl (maybe like an '88 mustang??)

I dont think this will work for the SVO...

If its a N/A it'll work, you just have to have a good diaghram and add some wiring to make it work. Not sure how worth it would be though.

So do you think I'd be better off using the harness from the turbo coupe?

its not that much work to use the N/A harness. the only thing i did to the 88 harness in mine is move the map sensor from the firewall to the passenger shock tower. I then cut the engine to dash plugs off the old carb harness from my car and spliced them in place of the 88 ones. Not having the vam plug doesnt mean anything, someone could have pirated it. really the only EEC that is different is the la/lb series of ecu's as far as pins. i didnt have to change any pins around on my 88 harness other than running the VAM wires and im using a pf3 from an 86 merkur.

I was just kinda looking for a plug-n-play type of setup. I HATE working with wiring. I'm not even sure it is an '88 harness. I dont know what it is.

I believe that to be an 87-89 NA harness.

Now damit how close are you? Is this the last thing you need? I jave a couple of harnesses but they are not for sale. I just cant bear to not see an SVO saved though.

Were you planning on running a PE code computer too? Did you ever find one of those? Or were you going to do an EEC tuner?

Thats what I thought >:(

Well I just want to get it wired before I drop the engine and tranny in it.

I dont know the differences in the computers you are talking about. I'm still new to this EFI turbo thing and this is the first one I have had apart to play with. I have the computer mentioned above from an '85 SVO and I have the LA3 available in the turbo coupe donor.

I really wasnt planning on any radical mods for this car. I just kinda wanted to get everything in it and drive it a bit.

The SVO is getting saved no matter what happens so dont worry about that.

I have the complete wiring still sitting in the turbo coupe. Maybe I can use the wiring and the LA3 computer all together? I have seen people do it but I dont know how hard it is.

Absolutely run the LA3 and the turbocoupe harness. The LA3 is the last and best bone stock PCM for the 2.3Ti.. And it is tuned to be expecting an intercooler, 35lb injectors (brown tops, as opposed to the 30lb green tops), and the big VAM - which all SVO's and 87-88 TC's have, so you should have a couple of those, good to have a spare. The 87-88 TC was rated at like 200 or 210hp, the highest rating of factory ford 2.3Ti's.

Welcome to the 2.3 world, it's a relatively small community but very devoted. Lots of info out there.. I'm sure you know about turboford.net, but fordturbo.com has an excellent FAQ, and lots of other good stuff. Lots of good sites really..

The SVOs were rated at those #s. The turbocoupe was rated at 190HP with the smaller turbo.

I stand corrected, thanks. There I go mentioning fordturbo.com and getting my facts wrong. Looks like the highest rated was 85.5 SVO's at 205hp/248tq, with 86's being 2nd at 200/240. Not sure if what the difference is tho..

Good to know you know one of the best sites for the info. I spent a lot of time on there.

No difference, just how it was rated. Kinda like how the 5.0 hp jumped all over in years where there were no changes.

On an 86 where value is important, stick to finding the right harness and computer. The PE is the best option for you and has come down a TON in price. Like I mentioned before though, you could run your 85 computer and either just run green top 30 pound injectors and your good to go, or pick up an EEC Tuner , toss in a PE code , and have room for future playing.

but fordturbo.com has an excellent FAQ,

It BETTER! Notice the thank you line on the FAQ page :)

Well,

I'm going to see if I can find and '86 harness and computer. I really want to get this car together so it looks stock.
