View Full Version : School me on LTD doors: rear view mirrors
The time is at hand for me to decide which way to go on re-dooring my LTD LX.
Is it possible to use the "sail mirror" type doors and bolt up the LTD LX small mirrors to them? I thought maybe Jim Petersen or maybe Marz told me that this would not work, not sure why though.
Any advice appreciated - zak
You know that any mid-sized LTD door will fit right on. All the LTD's (sofar) that I've seen in the yards have the mirror your talking about. But the 85 LTD LX mirrors were not chome. They were cast metal that was painted.
I know that somebody was tlaking about the vent windows and the power window combo... but don't remember who that was.
Marz, looks like there's an echo in here ;-)
Yes, I was aware of the two different mirrors. Someone told me the small painted LTD LX ones would not go on in place of the sail type mirrors. Can't recall if it was an interior finish or exterior attachment issue.
I might e-mail James Petersen.

Not sure I understand the question. All LTDs use the same type of door mirrors. The LX were charcoal black, non LX were chrome. But physically they are the same.
Scott, the regular LTD's use a rectangular shaped rear view mirror (called a sail type mirror by Hollander interchange) while the LTD LX uses a physically smaller, oval shaped rear view mirror.
Someone told me once that it was difficult to put LTD LX mirrors onto regular LTD/Marquis doors. Trying to figure out why, as I have a chance to buy some doors and need to act on the offer.

Zak, I have Hollander on my computer and it says 83-84 and 85-86 mirrors are different.
In 83-84, it says there's only one type of mirror (chrome - which is incorrect since we know the 84 LX mirrors are charcoal).
In 85-86, they break it down by electric vs cable operated, and charcoal vs chrome.
Just by looking at some pics online, I can see some differences. It appears the standard mirror pictured below has a "crease" running horizontally in the middle, whereas the LX mirrors don't, and are more rounded on the front side without that crease.

Zak, at first I thought you were crazy. As far as I knew, all LTDs had the same mirrors. But you appear to be correct. Whether they are incompatible or not, I don't know. I can't imagine that the bolt holes in the door would be any idifferent, but I have been wrong before!
