Ive got an 84 20th anniversary with the 4barrel carbed 5.0. Cars got under 40k miles on it, damn good condition inside and out. But it has been sitting for a while and theres a few things id really like to do.

First of all, this carbs a pain in the ass. Rebuilt it, random leaks, fixing leaks, blah blah, running way too rich, ruining my cat, removing my cat, running rich. Tried adjusting but not 100% sure on how to do that correctly with this carb. If anyone has any tips or ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

My temp gauge doesnt register, which scares me. Im sure its just bad connections or something but Id really like to know if my engine were to suddenly start going into the red so I would have a chance to pull over and turn her off. Does checking this require getting into behind the dash a bunch?

My back hatch rattles a decent bit over bumps, no biggy, but it can be annoying.

The car doesnt have duel exhaust, its about a 2.5 pipe with one cat. Everything past the cat was one peice I beleive. But while sitting, the muffler basically rusted to the point of no longer existing. So i tore out all the exhaust after just before where the muffler was. So basically ive got about 3 feet of pipe past my cat and thats it. Ends before my rear axle. Its loud as hell...dont get me wrong, I love the sound, but it can be a bit obnoxious. Girlfriends dad doesnt like it much... Id like to go ahead and get dual exhaust on it, preferably an x pipe of course, but does your run of the mill x pipe from like an 88 fit up to my 84? The other side of this is I would WANT the car to look absolutely stock. The exhaust setup origionally split to dual tips next to each other on the drivers side...

Everything about the car aside from its wheels, plugs, plug wires, air filter, and tires is bone stock.

Oh, and evidently somethings up with my timing or harmonic balancer or something, cause when I hook up a timing light, the timing mark is about 180 degrees from the bracket thing.

Another thing, my radio. It sucks. Left side speakers dont work, right side speakers sound like ****. In any book i look in or on crutchfield or antyhign they come up with a 84 hatchback stang with the premium amped system as having 6 speakers....ehhhhhh no. I have two in the dash, and two wayyyy back in the hatch. With the whole looking stock thing I had been looking into One of theeese (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1979-1984-FORD-MUSTANG-RADIO-USA-1-CUSTOM-AUTOSOUND-NIB_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ80741QQihZ002QQitem Z4652376606QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V)
getting one of those. 50 watts a channel is pretty nice, and fits in stock dash perfectly. run my own speaker wires and such. Taking the stock amp out of the equation. Does anyone have any experience with this american autosound people that make these? Tried these aftermarket stock resembling recievers? Really as good as what they seem to be?

Think thats it for now.

The X-pipe will work from 79-93, if you have the double hump transmission crossmember.

I'm not sure who made the radio I put in my 66 but it looked EXACTLY like that one so I think it is the same company. It sounded good, I had it running to 2 6x9's in the back and it sounded good, and it wasnt 200 wats, it was only 100 so that one should sound better. It was hard to read in the sunlight thougt because of that LCD display

You can test the temperatature gauge wiring by grounding the wire to the block. If the gauge pegs then its probably just a bad sender unit. A 5-min fix.

I dont think the x-pipe will bolt up to his manifolds.

So my options on the exhaust question are what then?

You can use some aftermarket headers for '86-'93 either new or used or buy a factory set that someone has taken off of their car in the classified section. Many time the used stock headers can be had for free or nearly so. The same goes for a factory h-pipe and catback.

Double hump transmission crossmember?

Get one from a '86-'93 5.0 stang (classifieds) or get a new one from ford or a mustang parts place. About $15-40 dollars last time I noticed.

What exactly is it?

And on the subject of the headers, Id really rather not get into replacing headers, but if thats what it takes for a good xpipe I guess thats what it takes. On the subject of that though, the 86-93 headers bolt up to the 84 just fine then? And then how difficult is it to change them? Seems like some tight spaces to be working in.

Hatch rattle: try adjusting the striker (the bottom part, not the piece attached to the hatch itself) to tighten things up a bit.

As for your harmonic balancer, someone has the plug wires on wrong. They probably did not line up the #1 post on the distributor cap with the #1 cylinder. I had a car someone had done that to before. Pull your distributor out, line up post #1 with the #1 cylinder, and move all of your wires to the proper location.

The crossmember has an extra hump in it to allow for another exhaust pipe to clear it. Not hard to change.

Keep in mind if you go to 86+ headers you loose the heat risers.
Depending on how stock looking you want to keep it.

Im doing the dual change on my anny now and splitting the rear pipes.
Looks so much nicer too ;)

I believe that if you can find some manifolds from a late '85 you can bolt up the pipe and still have the heat risers. There was a thread on this site a few weeks ago about doing that.
