Yes. Different gearing in the 85-86 trans. I believe that the 84 in pretty close to all of the other 4 cyl trans.

Also not sure but the internals may be different. I know that most of the rebuild kits for the WC T5 also list the 85-86 SVO trans.

What rear gearing are you going to use? Honestly I think the rear gearing will be the deciding factor on what trans to use.

Gearing is the major difference.

The N/A trans has something like a 4.0 first gear...I used on in my SVO as a temporary once when rebuilding it and 1st gear was barely useable with a 3.73 rear gear. The trans I used was from an '88 model....other years may vary in gear ratios

Places list a seperate rebuild kit for the SVOs because of the input shaft bearing. Although it uses the smaller diameter pilot bearing, the input shaft bearing itself is the same size as the V8 unit. That is why you can use the V8 input bearing retainers on the SVO T5s but not on any other 4 cyl tranny. That's how it was explained to me by the folks at Hanlon.

In what regard? I do know from past experience that you definately cannot use the steel input bearing retainers on the n/a 4 banger T5s without modification. However the one I bought to install on my 86 SVO T5 fit like a glove.

I have a hard time doubting any information from Hanlon...Bob's wife has forgotten more than most of us know about 5 speeds and I'd bet my money on Linda in a knowledge battle against anyone.

I've dealt with them for years....you'll never find anyone else more willing to help out even after hours.
