Had an "issue" with the factory column in my 1980 fairmont related to the key cylinder. I know the older 79-86 mustangs used simular electronics as far as the bright lights goes etc.

Can I just pull a column from a 79-x car and it bolt right in my car? I already have a 93 steering shaft which I know doesn't make a difference but I would like to obviously retain bright light capabilty etc, W/O having to go thru the task of wiring things or converting harnesses unless it's a simple color to color swap.

I'm also aware of the "splined" colum shafts for the steering wheels of the older model mustangs post 79-x which are the same as the F/Z's splined columns. I don't have to keep my stock steering wheel I don't suppose.

Any help appreciated, right now my mont' is rigged up to start with the electronic piece broken off the column (dont' ask, yes I did it I had to get home from work!. :D)

In my old 79 Furtura (which was later wrecked) I converted it to a floorshift by using a 79 Mustang column. I didn't have any isues... fit right in.

Plus the 79 Mustang was a non-tilt... I don't like tilt steering.

i've swapped the same column between a 83 GT Mustang, a 87 Mustang LX and a 79 Capri RS with no problems. all the stuff for turn signals and windshield wipers are held on by screws or bolts in the same places on the column.

I ended up fixing my issue by putting in a new key cylinder and installing a new electronic switch on the column. Word to the wise, don't lose your ignition key and think it's easy removing the cylinder. :)
