I have a chance to pick up a 2.3 turbo longblock for cheap. I wanna make sure its a real turbo block, but i don't know how to identify it it. Any clear give aways like oil line port location, or casting numbers?

it currently has a tube header and a crab, no turbo...

there is a oil drain back boss on the passenger side that is taped for an oil drain. Its low and towards the rear right above the oil pan area.

still in a car? if not what car is it coming out of? if an svo then it should have an oil cooler where the oil filter is with a spiders web of coolant lines.

the oil-drainback is the best way to know, it is the easiest and most apperent even if it is a bare block out of the car

the non-turbo has the boss on the early block, but it is not cut out for the return

What about on the carbed turbo blocks? I don't think the boss is there on those.

didn't some of the later blocks have the drainback port and just had it pligged on n/a motors

No, the n/a blocks have the boss, but it isn't drilled and tapped.

On the carb'd turbo motors the oil drainback was on the driver's side of the block. Unfortunately I don't have my 81 manual anymore that showed where the oil drain was. Perhaps someone here who owns one can enlighten us.

You can put the turbo on either one. Guy here and I think Chuck W just drilled a hole in the base of the block for an oil drain back.

Yup, you can see in this pic here. It went to close to the std turbo block return location.

That is actually a '79 carb-turbo block. The original oil drain is on the driver side down near the oil pan flange...
