Somewhere I've seen a webpage detailing swapping in a Mustang/Capri gauge panel into a Fairmont.......can anyone point me in the right direction?

I do not know of any website directly related to this issue. That does not mean there is not one, I just do know of it.

I can try to help with wiring issues but I need to know what year/engine Fairmont you have and what year Mustang instrument cluster you are going to install.

The Mustang clusters look the same for 79-82 and for 83-86 but they are wired very differently. From what I can tell the wiring is the same for 79-80 clusters and for 81-86 clusters. All the clusters for the most part will physically fit in the F/Z dash (I needed to do some slight trimming to get an 80 Mustang cluster to fit my 78 Zephyr dash). The stock F/Z cluster has one connector to the main underdash harness, the Mustang clusters use two. If you look at ther back of a Mustang cluster (any year 79-86) you will see two connector ports - one in the center (at an angle), and one at the lower right hand side (as viewed from the rear). The connectors (the gray plastic part) used on Mustang and F/Z clusters are physically the same. If you have a 79-80 Mustang cluster you can plug the Fairmont connector directly into the Mustang cluster's center connector port AND you will need to make new connections to the other port. If you are starting with a 81-86 Mustang cluster then you cannot plug the Fairmont connector in without extensively rewiring it AND you still need to make new connections for the second connector.

I hope this is not confusing.

Howdy Paul.......I used to be MSWWOT; when i changed ISP's, something went goofy with my registration so I just re-registered. I have decided to go ahead and purchase the '83 Capri I found at the scrapyard. I'm going over there at lunchtime tomorrow and make them an offer and see if they'll let me put it on lawaway!
I looked at the Capri Saturday and decided the sum of the parts would be worth the purchase price............I plan on using everything I possibly can down to the sway bars and slapper bars!........This should really mess with the Mustang/Capri guys at the shows; I'm going to keep it looking as factory as possible.......sort of a "development mule" for the future Mustang........My Fairmont is a '78 factory V8 FORDor w/automatic....the Capri is an RS with 5.0/5 speed.

Before the Capri guys get all over me, the Capri is totally trashed......it's sitting in a scrapyard; not even a junkyard........if I don't act fast (the crusher is coming!).......all will be lost forever.
The Capri has been sitting out in the weather for some time now with the bubble broke, hatch smashed and windows down............the roof's caved in and there are "whiskey dents" everywhere.......Once I get it home, I'll inventory any Capri-specific parts that are salvagable.

I know which one you're talking about, but I can't remember it either. I put an '84 cluster into my '80 Z-7....except for the whole not messing with the Ammeter thing

The wiring was pretty close and really the second connector on the Mustang clusters is the one for all the "extra" gauges.
