I need to replace the muffler on my '85 SVO. What is a good one to run? I want to stay with the single exhaust but I dont want the muffler to sound like a fart-box.

Dynomax Super Turbo?
or any of the "Thrush" brand mufflers

Greg, I like the Magnaflow. Got them on the 2R. Duals however, but still sounds good without sounding like a tuner car. Sounds stock at idle.

straight pipe. 3" all the way back with nothing to impede slow :D

Hooker MaxFlow
Borla Pro XS
Dynomax Ultraflow(welded or Stainless)
Magnaflow Performance

I personally have a Maxflow on mine, it has a slight drone on the highway but around town and at stop lights you'll forget the car is running. Not sure about the Super Turbo or its cheaper Thrush brother because I had it, but it had no tail pipe...it was LOUD.

My SVO has a flowmaster something on it. I bought it this way. I can't stand it. At idle it sounds good. Like a deep sounding V-8. Just loud as hell driving it down the road. One thing I plan on changing this year.

I had 3" turbo back with a bullet muffler on the very back. It was loud though. Somewhere I have a video of it on the dyno.

turbo cars dont work with flowmaster type mufflers, so just avoid that.

I ran a 1 chamber flowmaster circle track muffler square one not the bullet type on my 84 gt turbo(had a 85 svo motor in it) deep idle like a crotch rocket at wot rest of piping was 3" muffler was only 70 bucks from summit

Any straight thru muffler works very well with a turbo aplication, you cant go wrong with dynomax either the superturbo or ultraflo, borlas are also real good, and hooker aerochamber are great also for turbo aplications.

Avoid chamber mufflers like flowmaster.

Aerochambers are just like Flowmasters. The Hooker Maximum Flows are a straight through design like the Dynomax Ultra Flows.

Aerochambers are just like Flowmasters.

This is NOT correct. I have an Aerochamber here that wil be going on my 2.3 Capri. Its 3" offset / Offset, and I can still see straight through it. Hooker did a terrible job with that name, people think chambered muffler like Flowmaster. Its not, it's got a chamber around the straight through flow path. I got it because they are very quiet, and straight through.

really, the thrush ones work just fine, i have one on my t-bird, it goes like this

3" downpipe
thrush super turbo
dump

not too loud, my capri 5.0 is much much louder and it has tailpipes

the t-bird dynoed 285 at rear wheels

Thats what I had and my buddy with a 10 second LX with dumped Bullets came up to me and said my car was loud.

loud is all in the ear of the beholder, and at 26psi i bet anything would be loud although you can hear the turbo over the exhaust, so i guess it is all relative

At full boost the sound of the exhaust totally changes.

Check out the picture. Not ideal for turbo applications.

I really wanted the Aerochamber, let us know Bob what is up with it. Im not sure if it has welded baffles and such in it from the description or not.

I have a magnaflow 3 inch with a 3inch magnaflow cat. Sounds great at idle and under boost all I can hear is the turbo. It was kinda loud without the cat but not anoying loud.

Once under boost the exhaust sound changes dramaticly. I cant even hear the exhaust under boost just the turbo doing its thing.

I wonder how much louder the magnablow would be w/o a cat? I wont be running a cat. Which type center inlet offset outlet?

Bah! Mufflers? We don't need no stinking mufflers...

I have one of the round bullet style magnaflows on mine. 3inch in and out.

Are you trying to have something quiet?

mcb82gt

Not really quiet, but I dont want hi/freeway drone. If it is loud while really in the boost that is fine. As long as it flows well, doesnt sound like a tractor and I can hear the turbo. Thats all I want

Mine wasnt loud in the car without the cat but outside of the car it was kinda loud.

One of my 5.0 friends mistook the SVO for a eclipse/talon once. That was before the cat was on it. I dont know if that was a good thing or not.

Thats one thing I read on every review of the Aerochamber, it got louder at around 2k rpm. And it may drone on a 4 cylinder engine at those RPMs.

Oh, and it will always sound like a tractor. Just a quiet one.

Got any sound clips? A friend of mine has an SRT4 that has 3" straightpiped duals and it sounds wicked. Granted, that's not a tractor motor, but I'd still like to try to get a similar sound from my SVO.

I've got a single Borla on one SVO and a pair of MAC Flowpaths on the other. Both sound good but also different....and both cars have a very similarly set up 2.5. The MAC system sounds great at idle and at speed although since they have been on there for 8 years I am considering something else just for a change. I don't care about the "flowmaster type mufflers aren't good on a turbo application" simply because I am not out for every ounce of power on that particular car...it's a street car, I don't drag race it and it's fast enough.

I do have a pair of Powertone mufflers I was thinking of trying but I haven't found anyone else who has used them...nor have I heard them so I haven't been in a rush to put them on in case I didn't like them.

Just remember that the SRT4 has a series of resonators unless you're buddies isn't stock anymore(don't know what size SRT4s are stock).

+5 for MagnaFlow

I run the 3" race muffler. It has a bit of resonation at about 2800-3000, but thats the RPM you keep it at so the hear ya comin! You can't hear it on the highway tho. True with the turbo sound, once it spools all you hear is swwoooooosh.

I had a Flowmaster on it before the MagnaFlow. I thought it sounded good with the Flowmaster. I did not notice any huge difference in performance from one to the other. It is on a full 3" system, over the axle, single, with 3" catco cat.
