I am about to dual out my '78 'mont V8 with column shift C4...I will be using stock Mustang tubular headers and a '86 H-pipe w/gutted cats...........My question is: will the H-pipe clear the column shift linkage? Anybody done this before?

I was going to do this (duals) with my late (wrecked) 79 futura. It was originally a column shift as well. I converted it to a auto floorshift similar to what the mustangs of the same year where. The early FOX stangs had a metal rod for it's shifter to trani linkage. I coulnd't find a Fairmont with that linkage... which is longer that the Mustangs.... So what I did was grabb two mustang linkages and used one to make the other long enough to work on the Fairmont. A good muffler shop should beable to cut and weld the pieces. I think I gave one of the linkages a good 2" or 1.5" extension.

I used a nice looking automatic shifter gasket to position and size the hole that was needed to cut into the floor. There are dimples in the Fairmonts hump as to where you should put the shifter.

You'll see not so great pictures in my Cardomain link. Unforunetly Cardomain wont fit the issues that my page is having... like not wanting to enlarge the pictures when clicked.

I'd like to keep the column shifter if possible for the "sleeper vibe".

Your problem may not end up being the H- pipe, but the haeders. I tried this on my '80 T-Bird. The headers would'nt clear the linkage so the H-pipe would attach. When I reinstalled the original exhaust manifolds the H-pipe cleared with no problem. Chuck

Note: the '78s may or may not have dimples. My '78 Friggin' Futura has no dimples (check out my website at geocities - I think it's in my profile. It would be under the date where Friggin' gets framed.
