Gas cap differences

Can someone explain the differences in styles?? I've seen grey ones, with and without "Check Oil" on them, and also black ones. Which ones are correct for which years? Thanks,

79-81=?
82-84?=Grey without check eingine oil.
84-86=Grey with check engine oil and two holes in the strap.
87-88?=Grey with check engine oil and 4 holes in the strap.
89-on=Black

I don't know all of them 100%...but I do know that the 1985 ones were grey, said "Check Engine Oil" and had a two hole strap.

Somewhere I have some part numbers...

79-80 had a metal cap, and the 81 I had had a gray plastic cap too.

Yes, but that one has a black strap which confuses me. Maybe an 81?

To add to the problem, I think there are some caps from other cars that are about the same and will fit on the Mustang/Capri.

All I know 100% is that the 85 caps should be grey, have the motorcraft logo, have "Check Engine Oil" in raised letters and have a grey strap with 2 holes.

Did you own the car when it was new? How do you know it is factory original?

I was not aware that any of the cars had locking caps....and I could not find any factory options for a locking cap in 1980.

it was optioned on the factory window sticker. it had an aluminum sticky ring on the cap that had a ford part number on it also .i dont have the ring anymore thanks to a clumsey gas station attendent but i will check to see if it has the number on it elsewhere

That is pretty cool. What does the factory window sticker say exactly?

the window sticker calls it a "security fuel cap" .... it wes a 12.37 dollar option keep in mind that this car was originally bought in canada
