View Full Version : Whadda you think of this weight saving mod?

I wanted to reduce front end weight & not relocate the battery to the rear. Relocation, battery box, running cables, on\off switch, reduced trunk space, etc just seemed to much trouble..... Maybe I'm getting old... The battery tops out at 14.5lbs while the normal stock battery weighs from 30-40lbs depending on the model.
Anyways I really would like your opinions on this bllet mount a friend made because another friend & I are considering having the billet battery tray & hold down setup manufactured if demand is positive. This is not a sales pitch; it is an idea..... Thanks
P>S> teeny, ain't it?

Here's the thing; I have a friend whom is a CNC programmer & machinist. He really liked the idea of creating a mount setup for me on the side & simply did it. Odyssey & Optima market several billet mounts for thier batteries; but not yet for the PC680MJ. So far? Everyone likes it. I question wether people would buy it though if it was offered.....
First off; you have to have a great charging system (3G) for the street or absolutely no accessories with the stock charging system(no stereo, electric fan, etc). Secondly, you will pay about $85-100 for the battery(e-bay). Finally, the mount will run a guestimated $100 retail; possibly $75-80 group buy......
I'm thinking only hard core racers & people whom want something real "trick" under thier hood would be interested...
A second prototype will be needed; this one i had to extensively modify to fit. I'm going to see if he'll engrave the Ford running horse logo into it & I'll post pic's of it when it's done.....EDIT: new pic's posted......

im gonna be switching to a 3g here soon, everything else is stock except for an electric fan. im not worried about the mount as with something that small it would be easy.

140A single wire set-up
Battery will be in the trunk.
Looks nice though...

I have been looking into doing the small battery conversion on my car too. The Dyna Battery I think it was. I like the weight reduction, the fact I don't need to have a battery inside the car, no rewiring, electrical problems associated with re-wiring and a manditory cut off switch for a rear mounted battery.
Also no logo, it will keep the cost down. lol

Yes..... I saw an artical about a year ago on the Dyna-Bat in MM&FF. My room-mate purchased the kit consisting of the 3G alt, battery, & steel box\mount for the battery. The steel box for the battery simply bolts to the side of the fender where the origional battery was with 4ea bolts. it has a nice galvanized looking powder coating. The bad thing was it's heavy & holds the battery in place with a bent flap of metal that NHRA tech's might frown upon. I felt my design is better & there might be some other's out there whom may or may not be interested. So far the consensus has been:"it's cool". But the interest to buy is luke warm at best..... i've got a new revised prototype to try tonight; I'll post new pic's.....

Ya I remeamber seeing a billit one as well for about $60. I will have to look again and see if I can find it. Yes I agree the metal Dyna Batt bracket is a little....ummm.... useless. Yes it works but not to my likes. But I can not see myself buying a bracket system for $100+ either. Especially when I can make one out of aluminum for $20 and some time tig welding it. But a done Billit bracket set up for $50-60 would be a no brainer buy.

Who drives a mustang in that weather anyways? hahaha
They don't even give a cold cranking rating on these smaller batteries. Doing research I have seen people use them on 15:1 compression motors with mini starters. Then again I have seen people say there alarm system drained the battery in a couple of days. I only saw one person saying he had issue with it in cold weather. There is not too many people using these. So finding good info might be hard.
I wouldn't think this would be a good battery for a daily driven car with cold temps like that.

My daily driving dutie's get switched between my SVO (when it run's) and my 03 Dodge ram. As long as there is not snow on the ground I like to drive the SVO.
I would also like to get some weight off of the front of the car for increased handling reason's but I dont want to relocate the battry to the trunk and then have to run a on/off switch.
Bummer.
oh well

You could be the sites guinea pig and report back to us. If it doesn't work e-bay it. lol Or you could switch the small battery out when it gets cold.
You guys are luckey. By us when it gets cold they salt like crazy. Our roads look white from November till March. I would love to be able to drive the capri all year round. But I hate rust. hahaha

No salt for us. But they do use this crap called mag chloride that will tear up the finish on your wheel's if you dont keep them clean.
I'm originally from the Iowa/Nebraska area and new car's will rust out in 5-7 year's if you dont religiously wash them in the winter time. I alway's drove 500 $ beater's in the winter time back home. No need to tear up the new car's in the winter time. So yeah I know how bad salty road's suck.

Trust me; I know...... I grew up in Waterloo, Iowa. I sold my '69 Camaro there awhile back not realizing it's value in that area.....

Ummmm... Yeah, there is a cold cranking rating on the PC680MJ..... 220CCA :D It only gets down to 35 degrees out here & no problems yet in 3 days..... I'll keep you guys posted tho....

Cool. I know the Dyna Batt and some of the other small ones I looked at didn't have a rating. Might have to look on E-bay for that battery.
And Ya 69 Camaro's are going for sick money if they are done right. My work makes and sells parts for first gen Camaro.

Sorry, only the top piece was machined incorrectly. The base was a "first time go" & did not need revision..... :(

That is OK. You can send it to me and I will do a third party review on it. hahaha Come on you can't blame me for trying. =)
Does the battery have screw in terminals or are they pressed in studs?
Keep us posted on the hold down set up. I for one am interested to see wht the final price comes out to.

The base is flat & has two 3\8" holes centered,(to mount the battery "forwards or backward however it suits the individual),for 3\8" stainless hardware. This seemed best since you do not alter the factory tray & mounting area. Two 3\8" holes are all that's needed to mount the whole "shebang".....

The battery has screw in terminals that are basically automotive battery "lugs' as you find on your normal battery. You can fashion a motorcycle type lug\screw setup if you wanted too.... You'd have to cut the ends off your existing battery terminals & solder in standard end with a hole in it. I'll keep you updated..... Just don't expect anything soon. I think the interest just isn't there for a "safe" investment..... We'll see....;)

OK So you use the factory mounting holes for the factory battery tray? No drilling extra holes then?
I looked on the Odyssey website. I see the different styles and lug styles. Thanks for the info.

No, you have to drill two holes for 3\8" bolts to go through & mount the base to the fender extension beside the frame. The bolt holes for the factory tray..... ell let's just say are in terribe locations for anthing but an O.E. replacement tray....;)
