Is this true? For Ford cars up until 1983 Ford key blanks had a small hole like

I do believe that is correct about the smaller hole.

I do think the 83 up are supposed to be a bigger oval key for the doors/hatch also

Good question.

I can't say what is correct exactly but the larger holed ones came on my dad's 84 Ranger and I got a few of those key blanks.

I can ask what the 86s got...I know of an original owner with the original set...

A waaaay bigger oval on the lock key than in either of those pics
It's almost twice as big as the ignition

slickshift has stated a fact, i have original ford keys for my 83 turbocoupe, small head keys for both and small holes

my 85 gt has small for ign, and the monster key for doors and hatch, like 2 times as big with big holes

Yes, I currently have a FAT key on one of my sets. I hate it with an absolute passion. I hated it when I first got the car and hate it moreso today.

I remember when we got a FAT key made one time (I think it was for an 86 Aerostar). The locksmith got the blank and couldn't fit it into the machine. So he used the grinder and hacked off the edges.

i actually have cool anodized aluminum key blanks for all my cars, but i still keep the originals in a safe place, and yes, the big head keys are annoying

Just to muddy the waters up, I worked in FLM stores while I was in High School as a prep boy in the summer of 84, 85 and 86. I went in the Navy in 87 so I can only go off the 87 aero I bought.
As prep boy, I had to get the stuff packages of the cars together for delivery.

I have seen both the "big mama" round head and regular with the same car, two big mamas or two smalls!

Oddly the choice vehicles were the Tempo Topaz Ranger for the big heads. Mustang was hit or miss as I remember. My 86 gt had the small ones from new. The first aero I had was a late 87 gt and they had the big mama ovals. The 89 aero vert had smalls. I left the Navy in 92 went back to a FLM store as a tech until my retirement in 01 and it was still hit or miss with the big heads until the onset of the single key and the PATS chip key

I got 2 sets of aluminum keys with my 81. They have the small holes and the door lock key is big headed. My local paint shop makes keys and have original ford blanks for $2 a piece. TL

Yes! the keys(both sets) I still have (that came with this 1980 car new) have the small holes. Also I have found NO small hole "aluminum" key blanks at any swap meets,Do you have any extra? I have a box full of original steel Ford small hole keys I bought over the years, A TIP!!! If that guy has "Original small hole keys for sale @ 2.00 dollars each, BUY THEM! I see these keys going for around 15.00 each right now. Gregg/Oh.

Here is what I have: I recieved 2 sets of keys when I took delivery of my 79 RS. All keys are aluminum, and all keys have small holes. The oval keys for the hatch and glove box have a head about the same size as the square key for the door/ Ign. All keys say "FORD" inside the ford oval on the front, and the back says "family of fine cars".
as a side note, my 89 Towncar has keys with a large oval hole, but I don't have the orginal ign key, as the car came with an aftermarket ign key..hope this covers 79 model year.

BTW....I also have the orginal disk with the key codes on them, so If I bought the set of keys on E-bay in the first listing, I could take them to the dealer and they would look up the code in a small book, enter the new numbers into a key cutter and cut me new keys. The cutter worked by squeezing a handle and flipping levers, not griinding..

Maybe i worded this wrong. The keys are not orignals, say from 1979. They are remakes by ford that have the ford logo, and family of fine cars on the back. Look identical to the originals. They guy has no porblem getting them in, cause he is always stocked up. He does not have the big headed keys, only the small head for the ignition. TL

I've got the original keys to my 83 convertible & the oval is the big head on one set & the small on the other ... big opening on both sets of keys. :?
