Well, I've been able to make a little progress on the Fairmont. So far I've gotten the car disassembled and painted the engine bay.
http://www.oncracing.com/images/P1010111.JPG
The rearend is also assembled and mocked up under the car. I'm putting a Steeda 5-Link rear suspension in the car along with D-spec Tokico shocks and 390-430 MM rear springs. So far everything has fit, except the chassis mount for the panhard bar. I'm going to have to cut the Steeda piece apart and make new bracing to run to the other frame rail. The Fairmont gas tank and straps are in the way not allowing the piece to sit in the proper location.

http://www.oncracing.com/images/P1010109.JPG
The Cobra rear brakes fit great on the NorthRaceCars.com brackets. The axles were sourced from them as well and are nice pieces.
The front suspension is made up of mostly Maximum Motorsports pieces. A Mustang K-member was installed along with some MM tubular lower control arms. Next to install are some 94 Mustang spindles and some Cobra brakes. There are Tokico D-spec struts as well as 375 springs on a MM coil-over kit. The stock manual steering rack has been replaced by an 03 Cobra unit and MM steering shaft.
http://www.oncracing.com/images/P1010110.JPG
Some Bullits were test fit as well. These have a set of 255/40-17 Kumho's. They are a little too short for my taste.
http://www.oncracing.com/images/P1010106.JPG
Well that's all for now. Hopefully in the next few weeks some more progress can be made.

Curtis, 'Mont looks outstanding! Did you have to roll your rear wheel well lips at all? How does your rim/tire combo fit back there? I'm having problems with my '78 Friggin' Futura with its Mach 1 rims and 245/45/17 tires. I guess SN95 axles are too long and will be using the North racecars' brackets. I need to find fox length 31 spline rear axles.
Good luck on your project!

Thanks for the compliments guys. I can't wait to get this thing running.
Dean_T:
I didn't have to roll the lips at all. With the Fox length rear everything fits great. I'm going to try a 9" Bullitt wheel with some 275's back there next. There's over an inch to the inside and at least 3/4" to the lip on the outside with the 255's on stock 8" Ford Bullitts. When you order axles just get them fox length with SN95 hub face so the disks fit the axles right.

FYI I am running the Lincoln axles/rear brakes and had to roll the fender lips quite a bit. A buddy of mine has a shop with the professional tool to roll them.
Even so, the rear tire occasionally rubs the inside of the quarter panel, a good 2-3" above the fender lip. If I had to do it over again I'd somehow get the wheels to tuck in more.

Tonight we mocked up the front suspension. The MM coil overs worked out fine on the D-spec struts. We also blasted and painted the 94 spindles. Next is a new set of hubs for the car. These are pretty ratty and must have a bunch of miles on them. I apologize for the pics being so dark. This weekend I'll try and take some more during the day.
http://www.oncracing.com/images/frtsusp1.JPG
Also tried the 255/40 tire and wheel combo on the front. I think this is the size we're going to shoot for. The fender is just sitting on the car to get an idea of how the wheel looks. It also looks like we may need to get some crash bolts for the strut/spindle to be able to hit ~3* of camber for the track.

Got the Master Cylinder from Napa tonight. It's an 85 Lincoln Towncar unit with a 1" bore. The best part is it's aluminum and only $16. Unfortunately they didn't have the booster in stock. I ordered a 94 V-6 Mustang booster for the car.
http://www.oncracing.com/images/85LincolnMC.JPG
Lots more to do. It's looking like the car may also get a TKO600 instead of the FMS World Class box that I was planning to use.
If there is part of this build that you guys would like to see fully documented let me know.

Hi Curtis! Looking good!
Thanks for the rear axle info. I forgot about the SN95 hub difference - I need to update another post I mede in another forum.
Your front wheel fitment looks great. My '78 Friggin' Futura has '96 spindles and I have major problems with the Mach 1 rims fitting. I had considered slicing and dicing front and rear wheel wells but decided to go with the North Racecar rear brackets and '95 Mustang front spindles. I'm prepping the replacement spindles now...
What a PITA!
Oh, and I found out the Max Motorsport K member matches the later Mustang's control arm spacing so my front track with will be wider than stock Fairmont still - oops...
Post more pics!

One question for you though, the mustang Kmember you're using with the MM control arms, did you have to make any modifications/if any to the kmember for the control arms to work?

Reman master cylinders scare me..esp after I had one fail on me when I was coming onto an off-ramp that ended in a light at 70 mph...hit the brakes...and they went to the floor... 8O Through some creative downshifting that should have broken something I was able to scrub off enough speed and got lucky there was no cross traffic as I ran the red light at the end and made the turn onto the road......
No fluid leaks anywhere...except out the back of it... No more remans for me....

I've been thinking the same thing Chuck. I had one from the "Zone" let go on a Mustang I used to have. It did the same thing. Covered the drivers floor in fluid as I pumped and pumped and no stoppy stoppy. Luckily the E-brake got the car stopped and I wasn't doing anywhere close to 70.
PPI has the same MC new from Ford for ~$60. Might just get it today and return this unit. No reason to skimp now. Especially on something like brakes. Sometimes stopping comes in real handy.
By the way your car is looking good. We plan on doing the same swap on a friends Futura in a few weeks. What did you come up with on the driveshaft? If you still need a K-member I have the one out of this car. It's a multi piece unit though. Not a stamping like the latter models. Looks like Frankenmember.

Thanks, I know my car is pretty rough around the edges though ;)
As far as the d/s goes, is your buddy replacing a 6 3/4" rear? The d/s I wound up with is about 49.5" u-to-u...but is about 1" shorter than I'd like. I have approx 2.5" of front yoke engaged in the trans, and with the current drivetrain that's sufficient. I'd like to have one closer to 50.5" though. I'll be swapping in a T-5 eventually...so I didn't want tomod a d/s that wasn't going to work later at this point. If the car was laying down some serious power, then yeah, I'd be a bit more concerned.
On the K-member, I've never seen a '78 one. I know they were welded and such. It may not really make any difference for what I want to do. I may just say screw it and get a decent set of Fox control arms and clean them up.

Well I was able to get a few more things done on the car. The booster is in. It required some "massaging" of the strut tower for clearance. The tower doesn't have the same notch like a later model car. So after making one and sanding and repainting the area it's done. The 5-speed pedals are also in the car and I'm still waiting an parts. I think UPS is holding them hostage :)
http://www.oncracing.com/images/Enginebay1.JPG
I also cleaned the original washer/overflow bottle and it looks like a new one.
http://www.oncracing.com/images/Enginebay2.JPG
I was able to pick up the TKO600 last week and have it waiting for installation.
Hopefully there will be more updates in the next couple of days.
Curtis
I hope you were real carefull about working on that strut tower. somebody else who was once on these boards did that to his Mustang coupe and really hurt the integrity of the tower. A couple of brothers here gave him a talking to because of that cause it wasn't needed.

I can assure you that no structural integrity was lost. The towers are shaped different on this car then on a Mustang. The booster wouldn't physically fit between the tower and the firewall. It does now. It would have fit fine on my 86 GT with it's tower.

Damn, how'd you get the washer tank so clean? I'm guessing you had to pull the lid off.
Mine was brand new a few years ago and it already looks pretty scummy inside.

Ugh, I had a hunch the strut towers are shaped differently. I think I'll forego the SN95 booster and use a plain pancake booster from a non-Fairmont/Zephyr Ford. I ain't bashing my strut towers.

Dean,
It's not a great amount of work or clearance that has to be done to make the SN-95 booster fit.
Also, last night we we're able to get the chassis side of the panhard bar mount built and installed. We ran some .125 wall 1x1 between the frame rails up againts the floor of the car just behind the tirewell. Then we cut the .75x.75 brace from the Steeda piece. The panhard mount was then located and welded to the drivers side frame rail. The .75x.75 Steeda bracing was relocated to run up to the 1x1 near the center of the car. This leaves plenty of room for the gas tank and strap mounting area of the floor. When my camera comes back from vacation I'll snap some pics.

Well after finally straightening up the shop so it doesn't look like as BIG a bomb went off inside it, I was able to make some more progress. My fiance's family is in town so her dad and I spent the day in the garage. He's a big car guy as well and has a custom interior shop in Dayton, Ohio.
We were able to put the 2x2 frame connectors through the floor finally. Everything went well and pretty quick with two people working on it. Just have to finish welding them in tonight. Then I'm going to order a bunch of B-Quiet sound deadener to put on the floor, in the doors, the roof, quarters, and trunk.
I'll get some pics up this weekend.

Well there's a ton more to do. Now I have to finish all the brake lines and figure out a way to hook up the parking brakes.
Plus I'm out of adjustment on the ride hide on the rear LCA's. The springs are MM's 390-430 units. They actually need to be about 1.5" taller.
Then the Momo steering wheel hub MM sent is the wrong one. It's for a later fox car. Now I need to find the correct one since I've been waiting on Maximum Motorsports since before Christmas.

Unfortunately the wagon is sold. :( I had big plans for it when I got it. It's an original 390 auto with A/C (that still works). My fiance hates it and won't ride in it. She says that it's the ugliest car on the planet. Chicks have no taste... ;)

So the fiance says the Galaxie is ugly, but allows the Mont? Odd. My wife loves the classics but didn't really dig my LTD...
That is until she drove it a couple of times and people would be looking at her. She liked the attention and now she tolerates the LTD, although she doesn't like being in it while I'm driving. I tend to drive it more aggressively than I should

Nice looking 2 door sedan!
I like your subframe connectors - probably because it's the same style in my '78 Friggin" Futura. My geocities site exceeded it's bandwidth again but if you go to http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/3573/FZ/CrazyFZ.html and click on the last entry, you will see Friggin' subframe connectors. Isn't the E-brake cable routing the sh!ts? I think I'm going to have to notch the subframes and then weld a cover over the notch so the e-brake cables can pass through.
I still haven't decided if I want to use the '89 Mustang style brake lines or the '79-'80 Mustang style. Either way, I have to have 5" total added inorder to have it fit a Fairmont floor pan.
Fun cars!

So Scott, are you saying you have 05 and up Bullitts on your car?
Wanting to put bullitts on my Futura, but will have to do sn-95 spindle swap as they won't fit over the lincoln 5 lug rotors I have. I haven't taken the time to research the 05 and up bullitt offset to see if they would work on the Futura better than the 04 and down or what...

Yep it's for sale. Just losing interest in fox body stuff and Mustangs in general. Since '89 it's all that I've built. Except for the Focus which was basically a Mustang underneath when we were done.
It will make someone a super nice car. I hunted around for about a year trying to find a clean Mont to build. If someone wanted to come up with enough coin I'd sell it with all the new suspension under it. It only lacks a fuel system and drivetrain at this point. I've got over $12K invested in it to get it where it is currently.
I really don't want to swap parts out between this car and my 86 GT as it's a proven chassis. But if that's what I have to do to move the Mont to someone elses garage I guess I will.
Here's a shot of my 86 from the Columbus NMRA race in 02 before it had the GT hood stripe painted on it. This car I will probably be buried in. It's been in the family since 88.
