Howdy.....I'm new to this board....I live in West Texas; halfway between Lubbock and the New Mexico line.
About a year ago I needed a work car, a beater. I spotted a Fairmont FORDoor sitting in a storage yard........chased down the owner and gave $300 for it; expecting a six banger (that's right, bought it without getting closer than 30 feet of it).......Well turned out to be a one owner, 98,000 mile factory V8 car....what a hoot to drive after 4 banger 'stangs.
Well it's a keeper.....it's being turned into a FORDoor GT as parts come my way......I'm a scrounger at heart....and a cheap SOB on top of that!!!! So far I've got 8 ten holes ($100), a C4OE four barrel manifold (free), 600 cfm holley (free), Mustang 5.0 headers, H-pipe and double hump crossmember ($25).......now I'm hunting the "lower socio-economic" neighborhoods and the police auctions for a ragged out '87-'93 GT to strip for the big brakes, suspension bits and rearend.
To me at least, scrounging is half the fun of car crafting.....the hobby has gotten too crazy, too expensive.....people have more dollars than sense and are bidding stuff outasight.....I thought I had built my last hot rod until this project came along.....I'll bottomfeed off the 5.0 guys and build it for less than a grand without too much Egay participation.
My '73 Ford long narrow bed has 750,000 plus miles on it....it's new stablemate will get there some day.......I have a lot of storage space and scoop up abandoned vehicles all the time...I strip them and drag the leftovers over the scales......this way I'll have my own parts supply.....junkyards around here crush anything over ten years old, you can not even find a Fox body in the yards any more.
