I forget when they started in the 79-93 run, but the chassis were acid dipped to help protect them from rust. That might be the grey material you're speaking of. The paint is oversprayed around the underside of the car. I don't know of many that I have seen with any direct sprayed paint on the underside. That doesn't mean much other than I haven't seen any painted well underneath.

My 83 has the original paint and it's red everywhere -- underneath, engine compartment, and interior. I accidentally brake-cleaned a spot on my firewall while detailing and rubbed the red off, revealing gray primer.

Hmmm...yes I suppose I should add the the body is black lol
Also the black underneath comes off ridiculously easy
One swipe of lacquer thinner and your down to gray primer

The way I understand it is the uni-body assembly was dipped in the primer bath at DAP. That primer was grey then it was painted.

Hmm..I wonder if it started a certain year or not when they went away from doing it all. All of my 87-93's have a little spotty paint under the engine bay, where they did not cover it really well. My cousin has a 93 Reef Blue LX though and his has body color underneath it. I would think it would be one way, but it isn't it seems. My 86 SSP had gray under it also..as did my 86 2.3 car. My cousin's 93 is the 1st I've seen with body color under it completely.

My 1979 Red on Red Cobra is grey underneath. The engine bay is red.

I wonder what color that grey is and if they have it in a rattle can?

My medium gray metallic 79 hatchback appears to have black primer underneath and underneath the hood, as do a couple of other 79s I've seen. Everything later than that seems to have gray underneath.

ALL 79-93 should have come from the factory with the grey primer. You are all correct in saying that it is applied at the factory. What the grey primer is is commonly referred to as "E-Coating." It's a practice used by all auto manufacturers where a bare unibody is dipped in a pool of special paint, rotated around numerous times, and taken out to dry. the "E" is for electrodeposition. What that means is the unibody takes an electrical charge and the primer takes the opposite charge. This actually makes the paint magnetically wick into all the spots and passages inside the unibody and tightly adhere to the metal- thus creating a basically rust-proof unibody. Many of the cars you will see (some of you have them) will have overspray from the painted parts of the cars over the grey E-coat. This is normal. If you remove that overspray or top coat of paint and reveal black, red, or any other color of primer, that would indicate a repair has taken place. I'm not sure when the year was, but most E-coat on vehicles now is black, not grey as on our cars.

Well, my 79 is black underneath the factory paint in the engine compartment, and I know for a fact that this car has never been repainted (until my dad had it done) or wrecked. You can't make broad statements like that about any Ford product, especially the first model year it was built.
