What do you do when your rubber seal in the shift selector leaves the house. (melts, gets sticky,etc...) Does some one make a repop? Gregg/Oh 1980 Cobra C4 auto.

That happened to my Pace Car a few years ago. I bought a new one (from Ford I think) and it didn't have the chrome on it. So all I did was remove the seal from the new one, and reattached it to my original piece.

Thanks 2manycars, Thats what I thought I would have to do....The one of the local
Ford Dealers wants 62.00 dollars for the Bezel, and he;s not even sure he can get it. looks like it's going on my swap meet parts list.

Watch for a reproduction. I have noticed that is a VERY common item that is destroyed on these cars. Why it is not reproduced yet, I don't know.

I saw this. It may be worth a try. You could get it and see if it could be made to work. Its cheap enough and you could post your results.
-Mike
I'm willing to bet it will work. I might just give it a try myself.

negusm: I want to thank you for watching out for parts that might work. But.... Since I have a 69, and a 73 Mustang in my collection,I have several NOS Ford trans seals on the shelf here, I tried to make those work on my 1980 Mustang shift selector,They were too big. I found a new bezel from Green sales, but it was 64.00 dollars. Thats Pain. but what else can I do? Gregg M.

Can I get that part number for the bezel?
How are those seals too big? Can't you just cut them down?
-Mike
Well, there goes that idea

You "could cut it down,as its too long, but you would lose the mounting holes, that you need to hold seal in place. The Bezel that I had to buy for my 1980 ,just to remove the seal is: E4ZZ-7D443-A I would have just changed to whole bezel assm. but there was a slight difference in the Bezel markings from mine. (the Seal was perfect upon removal.) In other words: A 60.00 seal...Bummer...Gregg M. Ohio

I think some "Goop" or contact cement could be used to hold it in there. Even if not perfect, I would think that it would be a heck of a lot better than something all torn up or simply missing.
At $4 for that repro seal, I would have been very tempted to try that first just to see if I could get it to work....then bought the $60 unit if not satisfied.
Thanks for the part number.
-Mike
i have tried using the 73 bezel seal and it doesnt work. the seal has to be cut shorter so you lose the metal at the mounting point on one side.i just glued in some rubber i cut from some galoshes not bad for a temp fix but its gone to hell now from all the heat.

Allright, I guess it won't work then. I had a dream that I cut up a rubber welcome matt from Home Depot to make the fix.
I talked with MAtt from FoxMustangRestoration and I think he's going to put it on his list of repros to get done.

I did order a 73 bezel seal and it worked. Boss429 is right they are too long by about an inch. They have two holes that fit on the shifter bezel. I trimmed it a little and super glued the seal to the bezel. Ok, I just went in the garage and took a picture of the seal.

I posted this on another thread, but for the record: thanks to White86 for this idea. It is the bicycle-tube-for-a-seal trick. Turns out pretty good. I just locked it into place using the stock retainer and clips.

Good to hear about additional reproduction parts.
Here is a tidbit relative to the shifter bezel. The one I just put the seal into, is actually the second one in my car. I replaced the original about a dozen years ago. If memory serves (I don't think I still have it) the original had some silver trim on it. So if you are thinking about a reproduction there are actually slightly different pieces. I would be interested in hearing from others whether their (original) bezels are completely black or have some silver trim.

Problem is, there may be no good ones left.
Sandy Block with his 570mile perfect car in climate controled storage went to goo and another guy who found a NOS one on a shelf said that one was goo too.

Sandy Block with his 570mile perfect car in climate controled storage went to goo and another guy who found a NOS one on a shelf said that one was goo too. ) So True!!!!! Im on the 3rd rubber on my climate controled 25,000 mile car. I once bought 3 complete Bezels From Green Sales at 63 dollars each just to get the seals out,and besides the bezels were not the same,(not chrome detail on them.) Now I just looked at my Spare one and its starting to goo up.. This is so sad!!!!!! Should I have put it in the freezer??
Help!! Gregg M.

I'm the other guy with the goo one (still with the Ford tag on it!) I would vacuum seal it if I had another chance at it. Seems the things don't like air.

Bob,
I am intrested in this for reference. The bicycle-tube may just work because the ford seal just melts into goo! How does the tube handle the heat from the transmission?
Thanks
P.S. If you could post the link that would be great!

79mustangcobra: the bicycle tube seems to have worked fine. I did that installation sometime in 2005 (couldn't find the original thread). In Sept 2006 I drove the car from Houston to the 30th MCA show in Birmingham and it worked fine. I didn't see any problems relating to heat from the transmission.
I later found a NOS insert which was included in the project referenced here
http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthread.php?t=36954
So I thought I was in great shape with my new insert installed. Until... the car sat outside (under cover) for a few days a couple weeks ago while I did a U-Coat-It epoxy floor coating. When I got back in the car to pull it into the garage, guess what? The new insert had come loose because it had started going to goo. Sounds like I will be going back to the inner tube method......

I do not believe that seal you have is turning to goo. I have had about three of these seals were the rubber is seperating from the metal frame. This is due to rubber edge being trimed to close to the frame. Send me a email and I will send you a replacement. I have not had a single one of these trun to goo yet.

I talked to a guy on Ebay who had 100 of the Ford Automatic Bezel's. He told me that they were stored for years and he said everyone of them had the seal go to goo on them.
Like I said how would you explain a 1500 mile car's like below has had the same problem

FMR was talking about the ebrake seal...not the floor shift seal. I also, have never seen an original ebrake seal turn to goo. I have a NOS one and an old original one.
The automatic floor seal...well that definitely turns to goo as we've seen.

Matt, thanks for the reply. You may be right about what exactly is happening-- I may be jumping to conclusions based on my (repeated) experiences with this seal. I have not had a chance to take a real good look, I'll do that this weekend and let you know.

Ok, I have never seen an ebrake seal go bad either. My bad for not understanding the right seal.
