View Full Version : Has anyone got these to hook?...
Has anyone tried running a 26x11.50 r17 m/t drag radial or any drag radial on a 17 inch rim? If so how fast ? in a serious delema , love the look of a 17 on the the car but don`t want to splurge on another 2 rims for the back and tires since the axles and diff are being made to fit the backspacing of the tires right so the car doesn`t sit stupid

I ran/run a set of 275/40/17 Mickey T drag radail(not ET streets) with my blown 331. For a 17" drag radail they hooked like a MOFO!!! With my car a blown 331, AOD and 3.55's I cut a 1.62 sixty. And this was on 99 Cobra's with a race weight of 3450.

I`m just a bit un confident that they will hook behind a 700 hp motor leaving off a tranny brake oh well hopefully i will be able to get a set up that will have it hook oh well what ui give up on the strip i will gain on street looks and make people go wow , lol its rare enough to see a capri little on on that has been done in a prostreet fashion

I have to agree with you, about them holding leaving on the brake. On mine I was leaving at idle and flashing the converter. If the track is prepped and lower the air pressure they might be able to hold a controlled spin , but doubt very seriously that they will hang on without spinning..
On my car I didn't even get a chirp between shifts, under full boost(10#'s). And even with flashing the converter, they didn't spin. I ran them at 15#'s at the track and about 20-22 on the street. On the street they spin but are easy to keep under control...
Tell you one thing though, be sure to prep the 1/4 panle with Pam, Burnout gaurd or something. Because the rubber is gooey and doesn't wash off easy.

I run the BFG 275/40/17. Best so far was 11.8 @ 105 with a 1.70 60'. I'm hoping that will get better since I'm making more power since then.

I am not sure if it is the 17" tires or what but none I have seen seem to hook especially well. I see your 60ft is 1.70 which I find odd because a friend of mine 60's in the low to mid 1.7's ET's between 13.2's to 13.3's @ 101+ (with 26" x 15" ET streets). I don't know what to make of your 1/4 mile stats since most guys in stangs that I see running low 12's are around 110-112 MPH. Every car is different I suppose as are the tracks they run on.
I guess I am just saying that it seems that the taller rim tires appear to not hook as well.
Also with running a 700 HP engine at the drags with DOT tires I have to ask why? That sounds like slick time to me. I know I prefer the BFG DR's but I am lazy and do not want to switch tires at the track. I like to go have fun and not have to work at it.
This was all a FWIW post.
Ma84lx what size are those cobra wheels and how did you make them fit on the front ? I just got a set of 17x9`s and i can`t get them to fit worth a **** , i`m using the 83 spindles and ranger rotors help would be great on what needs to be done

My car would not rev past 5200rpm so I was max-ed at 1000' and stuttering through the traps. Thus the goofy top speed.
The King of Drag Radials is Big Daddy Dwayne Gutridge. When he ran his 17" BFGs, he was running mid 9's at 140+ with 1.3x 60's often tripping the beam with the rear tires. He has put the car on the rear bumper with amazing wheel stands using the 17" tires.
His most famous picture before getting the giant BFG ads:

With the correct suspension setup, the drag radials will take a car into the 7's with stability at the top end. And you don't have to mess around with the slicks.

Off topic, but I love that pic. I believe that was the famous 4 wheel wheelie. If you look close, you'll notice that the back wheels are in the air too.

I agree M C with what you are saying. I suppose that most of the people I see running the 17's do not have much if anything near the rear susp of the car in the pic...which just gave me a chubby :-p

The highest pressure I run my 275/40/17 BFG DRs is 20psi driving to the track, then drop to 12psi to run. My friend has a NA '86 vert that goes 1.58 60' and 11.8 @ 115 on 275/50/15s. He launches at 5K rpm full throttle using a two step and sometimes bogs the engine. The tires will hook if the car is set up and the driver practices. These tires are not forgiving like slicks but will hook nearly as well once dialed in.

I don't have 17's but the Mickeys really do work. I have a set of 275/60/15's on my car and have been 8.59 with no "work" to get the radials figured out. A guy I run around with went 7.84@181 on 325/50 MT radials a few weeks ago in Memphis. Its scary how much quicker cars are going today versus two or three years ago.
