I am thinking on building the soon to be mine 86 GT into a high speed runner. Running at the silver state open road challenge or one closer to me in NE.
I figure if I build it for open road running It would be able to do road racing and autocross with it. Anyone else do any high speed running?

Thanks

Tim

I haven't done it with one of my FOXbodys...yet...but have done some opentracking at PPIR in Fountain, CO and Heartlandand Park in Topeka, KS along with some autocrossing in Topeka, Salina and Denver in my '96 Cobra.

A friend/coworker of mine had a Viper GTS traded in and acquired an SRT-10 pickup. He has been trying to get me to commit to the Nebraska Sandhill challenge or the Silver State for a couple of years now. If you want to get a group of people together to meet in Nebraska this year, we know of some other folks that will likely be there and we can all meet up.

The Silver State fills up fast way in advance. The Sandhill challenge is a little less known and is a little easier to get into from what I've heard...and involves a little less travel to get there from here. We plan on keeping our vehicles (for now) pretty much stock and will have to run in one of the lower speed groups as a result. It sure would be cool to be able to run in the Unlimited Class, but that takes a few more dollars than I have, or am willing to spend.

If you're wanting to make your car a high speed runner, do lots of planning before you start making modifications. Get a copy of the rules and make sure you are doing things that follow the rules. Safety is the key to any of this. On another thread, the advice of first make your car stop, then handle, then go fast is a good one to follow. In addition to making changes in your car and adding safety gear like a fire system, cage, or rollbar and harnesses, you will need personal safety gear like a fire suit, gloves, shoes, helmet, underwear, etc. More $$$ to consider. Don't skimp on safety related items. Also, you might want to consider making the car legal to run in other venues like SCCA SOLOII or the American Iron Series. Guidelines and rules for different classes in those venues are just a Google search away. Or you might just want a fun and safe car that you can enjoy without conforming to any specific group. Any way you do it, it takes a commitment to a firm plan and a few $$$.

The sand hill race is what I had in mind. I do plan on autocrossing it. As I am a member of NASA I may look into building it for one of those classes. Only problem with NASA is there are no races close to here. I want it to be road legal so I can still enjoy it. I haven't autocrossed in Denver but I have in Rapid City, SD.

Oh, Yeah, when I build it I will be building it inrespect to the rules.

It sounds like you've already looked into it and have somewhat of a plan. That's good.

I was in NASA for a year while there was an affiliate group in Denver. That is no more, and like you said, the races are closer to either the left or the right coast than they are to middle America.

I just found out this afternoon that PPIR in Fountain, CO has been sold and will be closed at the end of October and then will be dismantled and most likely developed. Dang it! That's where I ran most of my events with QuickChick Racing, SVTOA, and SCOA.

I guess I'll be looking for other speed alternatives. The Nebraska sandhills are looking even more likely now.

Where did you hear about PPIR? There goes the SVT tack time close by. At last Bandimere isn't going anywhere. damn yuppies, like we need another shopping mall or 100 cookie cutter 1/2 mil houses.

Yup. I hope SVTOA finds another venue at one of the other tracks in eastern Colorado for '06. I attended the last two and was an instructor this year. I first heard about PPIR from Leslie Howard at QuickChickRacing. I guess at about the same time the press relaease made the radio and TV because other SCOA and SVTOA members were saying they just heard the news. If you go to the PPIR web site you'll find the press release. Click this link:

I wasn't going to do it because I have to be at work at 9 pm on Saturday, but Leslie's group is sponsoring what will be their last opentrack day at PPIR on October the 8th. My Cobra has been out of commission since I blew my motor at the '05 SVTOA event at PPIR, but I called my local Ford dealership today and have arranged for them to put the motor I have for it in first thing next week. I guess this is finally the push I needed to get it done!

My 4eye is set up for road courses, It's a blast! I've got all the MM stuff in the car, Subframes, Kmember brace, strut tower brace, CC plates, Urethane this and that, FRPP C springs, and a host of other stuff.
This a picture of me and my car at Road Atlanta this past August.

Here's an image of a Viper chasing me down in my Cobra. This was at PPIR on 10-08-05...my last open track event there before the track unfortunately gets demolished.

It's a little deceptive since the motion is stopped well in the picture, but if you notice the lean in the stock suspension, it'll make sense when I say I'm doing about 85 mph at this point.
