I did a quick search and will continue, I am trying to find out information on where I can buy rubber (from what companies) for my TRX rims I just got this weekend.

Ya they make em, here is the full link to them. http://www.coker.com/store/customer/home.php?cat=347
You will want he 220/55/vr/390 ones...... they don't have the smaller 190's in 390...... that and the "VR" tires are rated for 140 mph.
One more tid bit is that the TRX rim requires "Special" weight's to balance them... so if no one has them its junk yard time.....
You might also want to take them up on there extended tire protection plan..... http://www.coker.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=18242
But in all you must admitt, they look damb good......

My advice buy ponys or some else 16" or 15 inch wheels, in the future you get tires and new set of tires cost less than 2 trx-tires. I´ve got myself one set of trx and a ponys and about the cost that set of trx cost i can buy damn good 225/50/16 tires. One mustangman said trx-wheels looks stupid and they do

As far as 'looking stupid', I think that is a personal matter. One mans' trash is another's treasure after all. However, economics dictate that unless you have lots of disposable income or a dedicated show car, a switch is appropriate.
Even if a show car, get the trx's and have them for occasional use/show along with a set of whatever 15/16/17 inch wheel/tire you want.

On some cars they look perfect, I personaly haven't found anything that looks as good on the capri. I just wish someone would remake them in a 16" rim so we can put normal, and cost effective tires on them....
I am set for a while I found 4 brand new 220/55/390's for 100 bux "I now have 3 sets", gotta love farm country........

I am doing a 1981 Cobra Replica, the TRX will be used stricly for show so they will see little road time, aswell as the special weights, I will look into it, if they were made before they can be made again. I have a friend who builds special air boxes for the Hemi drag motors (not this new crap) but he had it special made for a race this weekend and his car got over 300MPH!! on a 50+ year old engine, so I will have them made if its an issue and sell them if it becomes an item of value.

Damn those cokers are expensive, Michelin's are 211.00 not 323.00 but I guess its the way it is.

Coker gets these tires from Michelin who makes a lmited run every year. The same tire that Coker sells for $300 + you maybe able to find at the Tire Rack www.tirerack.com for much less. I looked up their site a while ago and they still had them listed as available, but out of stock. I have a set of wheels that are going to be used for showcar duty once the Capri is restored.

Shave the trx wheels down to 15" and use 15" tires.

There is an idea, prolly about 100 - 150$ a wheels for shaving, then you can buy rubber for much less... hrm...

I've had the trx wheels trommed to 15 inch before .....was a hundred bucks to turn 5 wheels , just need to set up the lathe....no I don't remember exactly how much to take off , but I can also tell you this , watch your bead seating area , it gets a little thin .

I will have a company do it who specifically only do rims. If they screw up, its simple, they track down a new one, fix it right and give it too me.

I talked with the Coker people when they were at Carlilse PA. Coker did not "buy the molds" as is the common misconception.
What Coker did was take all the NOS tires when Michelin purged their system of the TRX. That is why the price is so high, there are only XX amount of them left.
I run the 10-holes on my 4-eye but I am actively searching for tires for my TRX wheels.
I have one made by Avon on a TRX rim, does anyone else use the Avons?

what is funny , Is I was selling a set of 5 wheels and new tires on this site a year ago , no one wanted to pay the shipping ....which was less than one of your precious tires ....so I gave them to a friend whom is now runnig them on his PINTO.....
what a differance a year makes....

I went to tire rack and they have the Michelins in stock for $211 per tire. Here is the link http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Compare1.jsp?width=220%2F&ratio=55&diameter=390&startIndex=0&search=true&pagelen=20&pagenum=1&pagemark=1&RunFlat=All&x=50&y=7

390mm = 15.354" One would need to shave of .177" (half the amount over 15") to get the rim to 15"
Another option I have seen is to cut the center out of the TRX wheel and weld them in a 15" or 16" rim hoop or donor wheel.
jpywell
09-18-2005, 10:13 PM
I agree with all these thinking they are great ideas, but the major killer here is that it wont have 390mm rubber and it will give it away. I will try and keep mine authentic as possible for as long as possible.

Driving Stangs for almost 15 years now and having 6 Stangs I have never bought 4 tires at one time. My 83GT had the TRX rims along with the first 82GT had em. Both those Stangs I bought 2 trx tires from NTW (NTB now). This was back in the early 90's. I must say they are the worst tires I have ever bought. 0 tractions. You can't get em to bark. All they do is slide. I also have to ad I have no idea how long those tires sat on the shelf before I bought em. The second worst pair tires I bought are the first generation (tread design) Falken Zieks. As much as I hate goodyears the GT+4's I had on my 91 were pretty damn good.

What a PITA. I ditched the TRXs on Turdbo ASAP. I'd put any standard wheel on it unless you're a purist or showing the car and have to have the TRX wheels to be original.
$200+/ tire vs. $75 set of 10-holes and $250 for 4 tires. It was a no-brainer.

Ahh just saw that....
WTF is up with the special weights? Maybe I should see what's on my crap TRXs. May be worth some coin!

Ya whats up with the special weights? I would think you can static balance the tires with the stick on weights.

If you get set of trx you must have a set of 15" or 16" as daily drive, i have 16" because i want to drive saturday on the track and sunday in a quartermile and i can buy new set of tires on monday and cost is as much as 2 211 dollar michelin and you get them straight from the shop. If i had the money i would do pacecar copy with bullits and cobra r brakes and 393 or 410 and manual transmission, but i dont have. So if you want buy set of trx-tires if you got the rims and one set on maybe 15" and drive trx only shows etc.

TRXs don't look right on any car but a four-eye. I wouldn't have TRXs on a modified Stang. But on stock '79-'84 Mustangs, TRXs rock. They are unique and cool :upthum:. So if you got a gripe about the expense, I agree. But if you think they look bad, well... :? you may be in the wrong sub-forum.
IMHO, don't get anything but Michelins. All TRX-equipped Mustangs came with 'em; if you buy a tire that says something else on the sidewall, it's not gonna be right. And don't worry about driving on them; they'll last.

Surprised about the weights. That would explain why Goodyear used the sticky weights on my rims when I had the tires put on last week. I thought they were just respecting the rims. I just resurfaced my trxs and threw out all the old weights. They looked like regular weights to me?

Quote:("TRX rim requires "Special" weight's to balance them.".) The only thing different about the weights are the fact they were factory coated with a clear teflon like coating so that weight would not "bleed" and discolor the alum. TRX rim edge. You can use a regular balance weight as OEM TRX weights are kinda hard to find. Tip#2:If you look at swap meets you will still find 1,2,3,4 TRX rims for sale, alot of times one of these wheels will have a real good tire, with little wear on it. I have found many good tires this way.(even this year) I now think I have a liftime supply of TRX tires.(maybe) Gregg M.

I just got the new Mustang Monthly and in the Late-Model corral on page 95 is a header that says "TRX Dilemma solved". This guy from the Pace Car Registry will cut down your TRX rim and put it on a 15 or 16 inch forged aluminum rim for about $300 each! Then they say that solves the problem?
$1200 for butched TRX rims and you still have to buy the tires? They even include info on how to contact the guy. How much did that plug cost him? I guess I'm just a purist. TRX rims need the Michelins or you might as well put on wheels with wal-mart hubcaps.

Caution there Stangboy.....the reason that shops charge big bux for turning the TRX is the liability. Remember, you have to treat aluminum like ice cubes. you need to understand the properties of aluminum before you go changing things. Stress and fractures are bad things.

I wont be doing it this year, but I finally got my hands on 2 sets of 5 (possibly 3, been collecting them all year). I am going to take one set in and have them done. Could not say when. I am going to get a quote however in about a month.
