View Full Version : Exhaust tip decision

I'm about to make the leap to dual exhaust on my LTD. I finally converted my car to a 1 fuel pump system so now I have room for a 2nd muffler. I bought all Mustang exhaust pieces and will have it pieced together at my friend's shop.
I bought the tailpipes with the standard finish since my tailpipes will need to be lengthened due to the extra length of the car. The only thing I'm undecided on is what type of tips I want. Currently I have a custom twin tip on the driver's side that is made from the tips of a recalled 99 Cobra exhaust system:

I don't really like chrome tips that much. I'd rather have something a little more sedate to match the sleeper-ness of the car. I was thinking of leaving them bare metal, but would that look cheap?
I really like the finish of the tips I have on my car now. Anyone know what are they made of? What are stock 86-93 tips made of? Stainless steel? I don't really like chrome tips, and think the slight shininess of these tips is nice.
Just looking for opinions.

The stock tips for the SN-95 stuff is usually stainless. Nice clean look w/ longevity. I've used them for exhaust tips on other cars.
I'm not a fan of chrome myself, and the bare might corrode and then look even more "cheap"
Personally I like the twin d/s tip look.
I'd see about maybe getting some more stainless tips, or reusing the ones you have on the car.

I was going to go with a Dynomax cat back system (SS tips btw) with the Futura... and just extend the pipes where needed... corse... cleaning up the weld may be needed.

Aww c'mon, why was this thread moved? This question is not specific just to an LTD, and in fact I was asking a question about the Mustang exhaust. It's an aesthetics thing.
Put it back in MODS/MAINT/MECH!!!

Yeah I noticed that.
Anyway onto the thread. I'm not a chrome man either, but sometimes a bare(aluminized) finished looks cheap...but I am cheap. A slant cut bare finish tail pipe might look okay. Then there is the half chrome/polished where its only like 4-6 inches worth of tail pipe that's shiney...then there is the all the way up to the axle polished which is probably the most expensive.
What I really wanna do is sorta have black tail pipes!

I like the double barrel shotgun look on there myself...here's my tip:

Otherwise, I think the best all time sleeper exhaust is non-chrome exiting just behind each rear wheel (after the rear axle)...that way, on cold mornings, your car would be giving ample SUBTLE warning to all those who approach from behind...

my mustang has non-chromed stainless steel tips that over time have become blackened due to use, etc... they look just fine and add to the sleeperness of that car... [it has no badges, is an LX and has a good amount of engine and suspension work, with mesh wheels] i sneak up on ppl alot in it... ill see if i can find a rear shot that shows off the tips

Well you have Pontiac wheels on your car, so your opinion doesn't matter.
j/k. I picked up Magnaflow stainless tailpipes with polished tips for cheap.
BTW I'm having subframe connectors installed in the car as we speak!

They're from a 90s Pontiac Bonneville. He thought they were from a Lincoln but I had to correct him

Hmmm, and they fit? I thought the GM's had a different bolt pattern/size.
Well, I just learned something today :D .

Some do....
A friend of mine had a 77 Cad... one of the rims started leaking... so... he and I went to the salvage yard and was "lucky" enough to find a 77 cad same modle and almost the same options as his. So he bought the rim and took it back and tried it on his Cad... and the bolt patern was different... but only slightly.
Wierd eh?

I just went and looked on eBay real quick, those ponitac wheels are 5x115mm, where as a 5-lug mustang has a 5x114.3 bolt pattern. Did you notice the difference driving around?

they fit perfect, no problems at all. the only difference between them and the wheels on it now is that the 'new' ones are taller and skinnier so it turns on a dime but traction is, to say the least, an issue.....

personally, I think that a pair of 2 1/2 inch stainless pipes, one on each side with a 45* angle cut would look best
