Hi everyone,

Im new to the site and new to fords. I have always been in the old 70's chevys. but after getting my 85 it made me have a change of heart.

Anyways heres my question. If i remember correctly we have 210hp in the 85 gt carb 5.0s. I was wondering what would be some ways of getting this thing to 300-350hp range?

Thanks
Chad

Ok first of all this might get a better responce in the mods/maitnace section.....

Ok your base numbers are this... 210hpr@4400 rpms and 270torque @ 3200rpms....

Now your best bet for making 300-350 horse is either a supercharger, or head swap, or both.... Your motor has the forged pistons already in it, so it can handle some boost. But the week point is your heads, especial for 350 horse. For head upgrades this list looks something like this..... E-7's off a 89-93 stang, GT-40 head's of an explorer, then your into the aftermarket heads like AFR's...... Then you need to decide what rpm range you want to run in, or if it will be street driven over dragged. I am building my motor with the E-7's a Performer manifold, a 570cfm Holly streat avenger carb, and the ford racing B303 cam. My goal is 300 horse while keeping the torque down low in the 3000rpm range, for a daily driver  .....

Another thing that might help you is to get the Summit catalog, and pick a MM&FF mag........

Thanks, I looked for turbos for 85 mustang but found nothing. Im going to hit the salvage yards and look for a 89-93 gt for some heads. How must power will the newer heads add to the motor?

Well figure the 85 had 210, the 90's stangs' had 225, and the 93 cobra "has gt-40 heads, same as explorer" had 235-265 horse. So you could see 25-50 horse increse with the E-7 and right carb/ manifold combo....... The E-7's should be around 20-50 bucks. The GT-40 heads would be 500 dollar range...... If you post a wanted add in the "for sale wanted" page You will most likely have good luck..., that and I wish you luck, if there is anything else "PM" me.......Nelson

Hey chad.

The e7 heads are virtually identical to the heads you have with the exception that you'll get a bit more compression out of the e7's and with them your probably wouldn't be able to get to your goal of 300 to 350 horsepower easily.

To acheive those numbers you more than likely going to need at a minimum the gt40's if you can afford of aftermarket heads all the better.

If you car is stock it is limited mostly right now by the exhaust. It does not have a complete dual exhaust setup. Both sides feed into a single Catalytic converter and then split again past that point. If I would were you i'd focus on doing an exhaust upgrade first to get you some more Horspower and this is something you can build upon towards your goal.

first of all, E7's came on 87+ mustangs, not 89+

are you guys talking about rwhp or just flywheel hp?

i think its near impossible to get 300+ rwhp N/A with E7's...at least I haven't seen it done. Does anyone have a link or something that shows someone making 300 rwhp with E7's N/A??

There are a few people I know of who have gotten 300 rwhp out of ported gt40's but even that isn't easy at all.

i think 300 Flywheel horsepower with E7's is a good goal to have...

If you dont want too go with boost, you must upgrade your heads, have them ported and gutted, go with low friction cam, roller if possible. I would then make sure you get a really good intake and headers. I dont know what kind of power increase you would be looking at there, but its the best place too start before adding boost. When the upper end is ready and you feel you need more power then I would look at boost and possible lighter bottom end (pistons/rods/crank). I would also upgrade too dual valve springs rather then the standard expecially if you think boost is something you will be doing in the future. If you go with a roots supercharger you will need a specific intake too that charger so keep that in mind if you are looking at intakes. The procharger and turbos allow you too use any intake you wish. I would also look at a much larger carb and work tricks in like a spacer too allow for better fuel mixture. Another alternative is too increase your gear in the rear too get that extra acceleration. 3.75/4.10

I personally always assume Fly wheel horsepower unless otherwise noted. But I guess i'm just old school! I think even 300 Flywheel horspower with unported e7's would be pretty hard to attain.

I had a 306 with performer heads and intake with a E303 cam. It made 320hp. With the s-trim and tuning 459 RWHP. You cant beat the blower for power.

That sounds like a good deal to me, most people spend $500 or more for a set..... Just remember now you have to figure out your manifold, and carb, ect.....

You can get 300 RWHP out of E7s, but it isn't easy. I am aiming for 300 RWHP with my E7 combo, but if I only hit 275 I'll still be happy.

Here is my combo,

E7TE PowerHeads. These are CNC ported and come with 1.90/1.60 stainless valves. They flow really well 217 on intake and 174 on exhaust at .500 lift. That's with small ports that promote great velocity for low-end torque, plus breathing to 6000 RPM. I'm topping them with a '93 Cobra intake & 24lb injectors. Cam is a Comp Cams Extreme Energy 264-14 hydraulic. This cam is designed to work with speed density but provide a major power increase. I know this combo should be good for 275 RWHP, maybe more but anything over 275 is a bonus. I am installing a windage tray, which should add another 10hp or more in the high revs. We shall see, we shall see. ;)

So, in short, my goal is 300 RWHP, but I'll be happy with 300 FWHP
