the ac doesnt work in my 1986 mustang gt. i checked the flap thing on the temp control and it works fine. i think i have freeon. today i ran into something werd. i was looking behind the glove box and discovered 2 wires that were just hanging there. they are red and black. they come out of a harness and it is about 12 inches long and just cut off. does anyone know where these wires hook up to?

Theres a plug behind my glove box that doesn't go to anything so maybe its the same thing. If your system is charged, but its not blowing cold, check the compressor fuse and check the fuseable link thats in the wireing harness to the compressor. If your air blows cold at idle but heats up at any rpm higher than 1500, check your expansion valve.

Does the compressor start spinning when you turn on the A/C?

Look at the AC pulley. With the AC off only the outer ring that the belt rides on will turn. When you turn on the AC the center section should also turn.

i think i have freeon.
Freon.
Pardon me, but if you do not know anything about the basics of an A/C system, why would you think it has freon?
You should let a shop check this out for you. If you do have refrigerant in the system it is under very high pressure. You could freeze skin or blind yourself instantly if you do not know what you are doing.

Ohh puter don;t be so techinical, Even I call it freon for lack being old and hearing ti called that so much by people before me. It has been called freon for so long. Soem habits are hard for some of us to break.
Once yu have detemined that the compressor is not turning on you can do a little trick. take a paper clip and put it in eithre end of the sensor on top of the accumilator. Just unplug the senson ar use the paper clip as a jumper. Turn the AC on withteh car running and see it the compressor turns on. If it does then yu have one of two problems. Either low on "refrigerant"( correct term used for puter benefit :P sorry puter couldn't resist the joke :P ) or the duty cycle switch is bad.

Well, poor old me just has to have everything correct. My wife has bashed many a fryin' pan upside my head.
When the switch is jumpered, you should have cold air in 60 seconds. If not, you are low on FREEon (it's not really free, it costs a LOT) and it would be best to turn off the system. The oil in the A/C system is circulated by the refrigerant.

hide the frying pan bro.... lol You really gave me a good laugh there.
and his statement about best to turn off the system if you don't get cold air in 60 seconds is a very true statement.
