When you go to get out, don't touch the steering column.

I'm guessing there's a chance your ignition switch is bad or some wiring in the steering column is in trouble....

But I suppose it could have a seat switch....that would be weird.

Yeah, weird....start looking for some wires under the seat.

Did you have your seatbelt on when you got out?

Did you have the door closed when you got out?

Good idea.

Is this an 86? Look under the seat and see if the fuel pump relay is not loose or broken or something. Maybe its acting up....

I wouldn't think its the inertia switch but there is that relay people yank out to disable their car.

Bwaaaahaahhahaahahahahahahah! (Laughing at the similar problem; not you). This very same thing happened to me about a year ago! I was taking Jeremy & Corey for a ride to see what they thought of the new motor. The car is cutting out a bit; so i pull into a parking lot to check it out. Jeremy gets out of the passenger seat & the car dies. He sits back in; the car starts & runs fine. Basically, the ground wire I hooked up underneath the seat bolt\mounting bracket (from the MSD6AL)was loose.... I relocated the ground that night....

sorry, i thought this thread was dead too, didn't know you responded, the inertia switch kills power to the fuel pump relay, it is the red/black wire, the signal goes from the blue fuseable link under the hood to the inertia switch, then to the relay, it is designed to stop the pump if you get in a wreck, mine was doing this type of crap, and i replaced the inertia switch (new junkyard part) and now it is fine
