View Full Version : How do I clean the "funk" off the steering wheel?

I was considering upgrading to an 87-89 wheel, but I really want to keep my car as original as possible so I'm just going to clean up the stock wheel and re-use it.

Any suggestions on how to remove 20 years of hand funk from it without damaging the finish?

Hot water and one of those sponges with the scrubber on one side, or diluted Purple Power.

Paint thinner soaked into a rag. Our steering wheels in our painting trucks used to get disgusting with this crud (I painted houses for 16 years.) I used to soak a rag in paint thinner, ring it out and wipe. Flipping the rag around to clean areas helped the thinner to dilute the oils and grime, eventually leaving the wheels looking like new. I never harmed a steering wheel's finish with this method and one of them was even leather. ;)

Good luck!
