guys I have a problem. A week ago my 86' 5.0 mustang was starting to over heat at idle but would cool down to 190 while I was driving. I'm currently running a 180 thermostat, underdrive pulleys, and a flow cooler water pump.

I first checked the hoses to see if they were pressuring up. Well I had no pressure. So I checked out the cap and thermostat , which came up bad and replaced them. I also decided at this time maybe I should switch back to the factory water pump pulley. This did no good because the ASP underdrive w/p pulley is the same size as the factory. I have assembled everything back and flushed the hell out of the cooling system. Today I was driving it around to see how everything is holding up. Well when I give gas, the temp reading will shoot to 200 and back down to 194 and shoot back up. when I'm at idle the cars temp hovers around 192-194. THis is with a 180 thermostat.

The only two things I havent replace is the fan clutch and radiator. Both are about 10 years old and the radiator, when I had it out of the car and cleaning that off, I had some fins desintegrate with the hose. Now the fan clutch, is not free moving and feels like it has some taughtness in it. I have also checked for leaks from loose hoses to antifreeze in the oil. The flow cooler Water pump is 8 months old and have had no problems with it and see nothing visible to indicate that.

What should be my next move, I'm out of ideas?
Change out fan clutch? Change out radiator to a new one, maybe a 3 row? Is using the 93' cobra water pump pulley worth getting?

Sounds like there may be a partial blockage in the radiator. If it is that old you don't have much to lose by replacing it anyway.

OK, I have been some rust out of the system. Assumed it stuff left over from a radiator stop leak that I used years back on a blown head gasket. I had flush the system out a few times. but not as hard as I have done now. Everything is coming out a lot clearer.

If I go with a new radiator, how are the Autozone 3-core radiators? are they worth the money or ,like there altenators, crap witha lifetime warranty?

I dunno, but if they carry Modine radiators go for it. Those are good. :tu:

roll up a newspaper and gently touch the spinning fan with it. If the fan stops quickly, your clutch is bad.

I'd pull the radiator and take it to a shop first. they'll flow test it, and can rod it out for $45-$90. That's the cheapest way.

Fixed it. It wound up being the fan clutch. I had checked it in checked it. but after making the fan spin 5 times by hand, it just free spun. The I tryed v8only's test and the fan stopped quickly. I also replaced the radiator as well and the old one pretty much broke. I bet if I would have left the old one in for another month I would be dealing with that sooner or later.
