Soooo...how much of a PITA is it?

Thanks to a flying rock, I now have a 10-12" crack in my windshield now, and the crack is the rapid growth type. And, it's on my side.

Looking for step-by-step instructions, tips, tricks, etc. We've got glass replacement coverage with our insurance, but I'm not too hot on having strange people touching my GT.

Just get some glass shop to do it. They will have the tools, and materials to do it right...in 5 minutes. They'll probably even let you watch them do it.

You have to get the gasket in their just right along with sealer, etc. When I have my dash out, I looked all around the gasket and there was a good coating of sealer all around. The guy definitely did a better job than I would have done.

I have to agree that the best way is to have a glass shop do it. I had to have the windshield replaced in my 85 GT, which had just been painted the week before, so I know what you mean about not wanting anybody to touch your car. The nice thing is, they came to my house, and did it in my garage, very professional, this guy does 8 to 10 a day, so he knows what he's doing. Total cast was about $200, well worth it in my book.

I'm having the one in my convertible done at my house on Tuesday. $175. To buy the glass myself it would cost $104, plus I would need sealer etc.

Here are some instructions on doing it yourself.

Its almost not worth the hastle of DIY'n it for the total cost of having it installed. In Pennsylvania a windshield cost me $235 installed. In New Mexico a windshield AND rear defroster glass cost me $245 installed. I think because PA has annual inspections the glass co's have you under their thumb more. In New Mexico there is no outside influence making you replace the glass other than the annoyance or piece of mind, making the damand level lower the prices so they can be able to sell the stuff.

If I recall, I wrote a fairly detailed write up on it a while back. I'll search and see if I can find it..
