Well, my 84 got me in a little trouble this morning. Being a police officer myself I can honestly understang people being late for work, especially in DC where traffic is retarted. Anyway, I got clocked 50 in a 30, reckless, and no seatbelt. I was in uniform, on my way to work and he pulled me, ran the plates, and for some stupid reason they came back to a 46 chrysler, imagine that. Even though I had my registration, he took my plates because the dmv said they didnt go to my car. He didnt charge me with reckless, but he did charge me with speeding, and he gave me a warning for the seat belt, but he took my plates and made me have my car towed back to my house. WTF, I'm a cop, in uniform, your a cop, give a brother some slack, but no, not for me, maybe a cop riding around in a primer grey 84 mustang just pissed him off. I dont know, I'm just rambling.

so what's the deal with the plates?

Yeah that sucks
Like the DMV never makes clerical errors...lol
Like when my ex-girlfriends license came up suspended
She paid a ticket, the court never notified DMV, she rec'd no notice of this
We didn't figure that out untill a few days later
Well, she didn't have her headlights on at dusk on day, she got stopped
They had her car towed and put her in jail
That was a fun evening
Not that she wasn't a psycho-chick anyway, but throw her in the pokey for something she knew nothing about, yeah, she took that well
They actually let her out before they should have because the older cop got tired of dealing with her
"If I let her out, will you PLEASE just take her home?"
Even with the cancelled check it still took three days off from work (for me-'cause now she can't drive w/a sus. lic.) and travel to two different counties and two different gov't departments (judicial and DMV) to get it right

yeah, I just got back from the dmv and they said the plates were straight and that he must have been running them wrong. They told me I could either pay for new plates or track down the cop and ask him for my plates back, I dont really want to see him again so I payed the $10 fee. Now I have to go to court and prove those plates actually went to my car. I have the registration with issue date 03/05/05 and expiration date 03/31/06 but I dont know if this will be enough to prove the tags werent jacked. I guess I can bring the title to the car, the registration, and get the papers from the dmv that says I payed to have those plates tranferred onto that car, hopefully that will be enough.

he said the plates went to a 46 chrysler, and I didnt have my current registration. I had an older one when I owned a 92 camaro, but I transferred the plates onto the mustang a while back. I have the new registration now, so well see what happens.

Bring everything you can, no matter how silly it seems
You just don't want to have to go back to court and waste another day
You may have to get the plates back from the cop to prove you don't have them on another car illegally ( like a '46 Chrysler lol)
Er...at least you would in my state
But that's a DMV thing not a court thing
I'm suprised they gave you new plates with the same number
I don't think they'll do that here anymore even if you report them lost or stolen
But I guess all the DMVs are different
When you handed him your registration it said Camaro, and they tags came up on his computer as a '46 Chrysler?
Man, no wonder he took your plates

What happend is I had just got the mustang a little while back, transferred the plates and had to use the registration to get a department of defense parking decal for the car, put the registration in the wifes car and forgot to get it out. I told him I didnt have the new reg. but I did have the old one for the camaro, he said the system would show if it was updated, but it didnt, I have never owned a chrysler period. Oh, and they didnt give me the same plate #, I have national guard plates so they had to order a new set so now I have 90 day temp tags untill the new ones come in the mail. Its just a big freaking mess.

that is amazing. I thought all cops had the honor system going on not to rat on each out. it's not like you had drugs in the car.
is this guy from the same township? or was it a state trooper?
sorry it happened, but I know several cops (local and state) and they all swear they protect each other, so that is a little surprising to hear.

When I was a municipal cop I got denied "professional courtesy" and got a ticket on base. That sucked, but luckily one of my coworkers knew the Major in charge of the MPs and I got it pulled. It still made me mad though.
Cops that don't know the value of the thin blue line need to have their priorities re-evaluated.

Yeah, I'm a federal cop so I dont like patrol the streets or anything, I work at a military base, this cop was from the sherrifs dept. He did give me a little slack though because he didnt write me for reckless, which is 20 over and is exactly what I was doing, but he screwed me on the rest of it.

Wellll...the fellow did break the law, right? In a perfect world, cops are fair to everyone equally, regardless of the status of the law-breaker, and punish fairly. But then again, this isn't a perfect world.

Hmmm... so you're a quasi-cop driving a beater 50 mph in a 30 zone, not wearing a seat belt, with no proof of registration.
:| = unimpressed, like the sheriff's deputy.

slow50, are you a gate guard?
slow50
07-25-2005, 03:40 PM
Yeah, similar to a gate guard but I do a lot more than that. Its not really that interesting but its descent paying job. And I'm going tommarrow to have the speedo calibrated, Im sure I wasnt doing 50, maybe close but not quite. I MISPLACED the registration and had a duplicate copy an hour and a half later, the dmv said he ran the plates wrong, now I have a copy of the registration, all history of the plates and what vehicles they've been on, when I first got them, when they were renewed. So I'll get out of that one. As for the seatbelt, guilty as charged, what can I say, do you put your belt on every single time you get in your car???

EVERY single time. It already saved my life once. It is such a habit that I feel naked in the car without it.

You know whats funny? One day I got the kids in their car seats and was starting to back down the driveway. I didn't have my belt on yet, because I was going to stop, hop out and get the mail from the mail box. My 3 year old son started screaming at me to put on my seatbelt.
The only time me or my wife has made an issue about wearing belts is when my son got old enough to fiddle with his and we "impressed" on him how important it was to leave it alone.
So it must have stuck with him already...

i always put my seatbelt on every car i drive. saved my butt on my last accident (that i caused). always have been always will.
infact a few months ago, i noticed a whole bunch of people being stopped for some reason. then i saw a tv ad called "click it or ticket" that and actually asking a cop pretty much settled my frears of being stopped for some trivial reason

I've worn my seatbelt every time I've driven a car for 15 years, and will continue to do so.
This may sound harsh (although it isnt intended as an insult) but the reason he didnt cut you any slack is that you aren't a cop. You're a government civilian or contractor and you are for all intents and purposes a security guard. I'm pretty sure you didn't have to go to POST or a 10-16 week academy like he did, and you likely have no arrest powers off base, correct?
When I was a municipal police officer, I ran into several folks like you, and I didnt cut them any slack either. They'd whip out their little id card and flash it like they were a state trooper or something, and I'd just be like "here, sign on like 26". Whether its security guards, bail enforcement, jailors, or MPs.... they might work in the realm of law enforcement, but they aren't cops, so they are on the wrong side of the blue line.
Sorry about the rant, and sorry you got a ticket, but I retract my statements in the previous posts about officer discretion. He did what I would have done.

I am trying to word this in a way that is not too harsh here, but it's gonna be a toughie.
Cops giving anybody preferential treatment is inherently wrong, and I oppose it. If you break the law, you pay the penalty, fair and square. Things need to be more black and white. Not that it'll ever happen, but meh, I can dream.

Wait until you find yourself in a situation with the knowledge that the only person in the whole world you can trust right there at that moment is your fellow officer, and your outlook about such matters will be forever changed.

agreed, sorry but this is just something only police officers understand. Murphy, no offense but this will never be a perfect world.

Ok, I did go to a 12 week acadamy at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD. And I am a member of an SRT team, which is very similar to swat. Granted I dont have any arrest powers off post whatsoever, I am still a cop, not a security guard. I dont have a stupid little ID car that says I'm a cop, I have a badge and credintials that says I'm a cop. I dont get upset when people say I'm a security or gate guard, but most people dont even understand, I am a cop in my own jurisdiction, its just most people (civilians) never really come on military posts so they dont know. The only reason I wrote this post is because at the time I had just got the ticket and I felt like ranting about it.

i got a story for ya
i got a neglegent driving ticket awhile back ( kid was kicking my car(wtf) and i hauled ass out of there, long black marks, etc) and when i went to court then announced a James A Wilsey. i told her that im James B Wilsey. she asked me if my DOB was 10-15-1980 i told her no mine is 10-20-1987. after a little investigating it turns out this James A wilsey also got a neglegent driving ticket. i got off with a $60 fine since it took so long to figure it all out.
what are the chances of this?

Word! Sometimes I ride with my dad to a dumpster that is like 4 houses away and I put on my seatbelt the moment I get in the car... Every looks at me funny because I have an unbreakable habit of buckiling up and I always tell people to put them on.

yeah, well, I ride a motorcycle almost every day without a seatbelt and thats 10 times more dangerous than the car, even though I should still wear it I hardly ever drive my car unless it rains and when I do drive it I usually just leave the seat belt off. I guess you all would see that a little differently if you rode a motorcycle every day.

Well I've been riding motorcycles for 35 years, but I still wouldn't drive, or ride in a car with out wearing a seatbelt. The reason being that I believe wearing one can lessen the injurys, or maybe prevent my death, in an accident, and I can't see any downside to wearing one.
However, I will say that I don't think its any of the governments business whether I wear one or not, so I am not in favor of seat belt laws (at least not for adults, minors are another story). I just see it as one more way we lose a little more of our personal freedoms through government micro-management of our lives.
Better shut up now before the G-men come and take me away!
