Hey all... got a question for ya....

The drivers door pw motor has gone out in my 1985 LTD LX. I was wondering if the 1978-83 4 door Fairmonts would have the same motors. Now, since the doors LOOK the same I figure they (the motors) would be the same and therefore I can order a new PW motor for a Fairmont to toss in my LTD LX.

This sound good to you all?

Theres a place on line that will sell a new motor for around 90 bux. I'd rather not get a used one and just have to replace it when it goes in a short time.

Thanks all

Jasen

Jasen,

My guess would be they would be the same. If I junk Chris's old wagon, I'll pull the power window motors for you.

The power window motors that I used when I converted my 78 Zephyr 4-dr to power windows were all used units from 83-86 Fox LTD/Marquis 4-drs. I doubt you will find many 78-83 F/Zs with factory power windows. You will find a much higher percentage of L/Ms that had them than F/Zs. BTW don't discount junkyard window motors so fast. Most yards sell them for less than $10 and the ones I put in my Zephyr 5+ years ago - that were probably 15+ years old at the time - are still running just fine. Just have the yard test them before you buy them, most yards will gladly do this. After you get them home you should clean off all old grease from the drive mechanisms. The drive gear compartment can be opened to really clean them out and re-lube them.

Or you can spend the $90 if you insist...

The p/w motors on just about all Ford RWD cars in the 80s and early 90s were the same. Crown Vics, Tbirds, Town Cars, you name it.

Like Paul said, there's nothing wrong with junkyard motors providing you test it before you buy it. In most of them, the plastic gears inside are busted or falling apart and you can replace them for like $10.

Well, I rebuilt the drivers door power window motor on the LTD and it works fine. The window now zipps down and up w/o a problem.

Now I need to rebuild the back drivers side door Power window motor on the LTD.

Man, I want to convert my FZ coupe... what kinda parts will I need? And from what car? I've been thinking about it every time I lean over to crank on the pass window!

Was mulling it over this evening while I installed my factory intermittent wiper electrics, thinking I could put the window switches right where the cranks are now, or am I dreaming?

Thanks

That's something I'd like to take care of myself.....I forgot how aggravating the non-intermittents are.....

Hi,
I put power windows in my 78 Zephyr 4-dr (see abobe post). The window switches do not fit were the manual cranks are. They mount up closer to the top of the door panel. If you remove your door panels and look at the back side you should see where the factory 'perforates' the area that is removed for the switches. You will need a 'double' or master switch for the drivers door and a single one for the passenger side. The crank holes need to be covered (I re-upholstered my door panels so it looks 100% factory).

I am not 100% certain but I will bet that the power window motors and switches from a Fox Mustang will fit your FZ coupe. When I did my Zephyr I used motors/switches from 84-86 Fox LTD/Maquis 4-door. The motors mounted to the inner door frame slightly differently from the manual regulators but the holes for the power windows were already there. The factory uses rivets to mount the regulators/motors to the inner door frame. These can be easily drilled out (after punching out the center steel mandrel) and replaced with 1/4" bolts/nuts. Let me know if I can be of further help.

When I went off to the salvage yards looking for annother motor I noticed that you did not have to remove the regulator to remove the power window motor. I've noticed this on my LTD as well. Though, if your converting over to Power windows... then I guess you'll need to pop the rivits to switch the regulators.

Thanks Paul, that's what I needed to know. Now I just need to round up the parts!

What I would do is go to a junk yard where they have an FZ coupe and a Fox Mustang with power windows. Then remove the door panels from both and carefully compare the inner door frames and window mechanisms.

If you can use the Mustang pieces you mill need to drill out the factory retaining rivets. You must remove the center steel mandrel of the rivet first. Yoiu do this using a small steel pin punch and a hammer. Just rap the mandrel sharply and it should just pop thru. The mandrels can be stubborn so it may take several hits. Once the mandrels are out you simply drill off the head of the rivets. The rivets are soft aliminum and drill out easily so bring your cordless drill (an a fully charged battery or two) and a sharp 1/4" drill bit. If the rivet begins to spin while drilling just hold the drill/bity at a slight angle to drill the head off.

Try to get as musch of the Mustangs window switch/harnesses intact as possible.

Good luck and let me know how you make out!

Paul
