View Full Version : question for the Californians
hi guys i'm in the military and i may have the chance to go to California next year
however before i put in for this i have a few questions about emissions (mostly)
i will be keeping my Virginia resistration but i have heard that there are roveing emissions checks- is this true, does it include the out of state people, and how extensive are they
how will the gas affect a high compression engine (12.5 or so)
is there anything else you guys think i should know
thanks for any answers/ advice you can give me i don't even know if i will get this even if i do put in for it but i want to find out what if anything i need to do to make my car legal to drive in California before i make my decision
thanks

yes, from what i heard, we DO have rolling smog check points, however they will merely check for any illegal parts. they're not that extensive in the smog tests, they just want to make sure that it will pass smog.

Being how your in the military and out of state you shouldn't have to worry about it. Theres a guy in the Air Force (I work for the Aerospace Corporation which has relations to the Los Angeles Air Force Base) that has a bueatiful pre-83 Capri that has out of state plates. I talked to him about it and all he gets is an inspection and thats it... no smoging cause he goes by the Federal regulations. And his engine is not stock.

Do you mean Roaming smog checks? As in road side inspections? No, I've not run into one yet. If your not speeding and acting like an idiot (or a ricer)... Cops wouldn't have a reason to pull you over and check. As of now, there are no roadside inspections... though, I believe they are still in the talks. Though, if there were to be road side inspections I beleive being how your in the military and have an out of state plate... they'd let you go anyways.

If you are in the military, stationed in CA, you can keep your car registered in your home state. You can keep your driver's license as well, for that matter. Smog/inspection legislation in any state applies only to vehicles registered in that state. As long as your car is registered elsewhere, no worries.
California sucks - that's why no one lives there . Yeah. It rocks (especially southern), unless you don't like sunshine, nice beaches, cool cars, and hot... uh, weather (avoids feminist backlash). I'd move back in a heartbeat if circumstances didn't prevent. :(

....and people wonder why I swapped over all the emissions control devices when I did my SEFI conversion. I'll need them if I ever move to Cali. 8)
i'm considering putting in for California because it wouuld be a chance for me to see new things plus its not south carolina
the roaming checks that look for illegal parts sound kind of like blanket searchs so that probly kills it for me anyway as i really don't have any emissions stuff on my cars or the resources to get them anyway thanks guys

I have yet to see or hear about roving/rolling smog checks or illegal parts BS in San Diego. Bi-annual smog checks for locals on the other hand is an entirely different story.

north of seattle? my wife spent some time in Spokane for college, nice little place.
imo, california is one of the best places to livet, AND, judging by home prices, so cal is one of the top most desireable places to be on the planet, literally. We've got NO rust, barely any rain, and are minutes from the beach, the desert, the mountains, and LA,OC,and Vegas. What more do you need?
Don't worry about getting nailed in a moving smog check point. THey happen, but it's real rare. I've lived in so cal my entire life and have never been pulled aside once for a smog check point. Although, my bro did get pulled aside at a check point for illegal perf parts, but that was a sting at a college aimed toward the ricer crowd which was EXTREMELY prevelant there.
Smog gets a bad rep here, and I don't quite underestand it?!!! It's easier than hell to build a fully smog legal 11/12 second 5.0 smallblock and not have smog issues. So long as you keep all your oem smog stuff on, and keep your car in good tune, you'll never have any smog issues, especially from a 5.0, it's nearly impossible to make those engines fail smog. 200k on my mustang, and not taken care of, NO hoses/vacuum lines ever replaced, oem everything, never failed smog once in it's life. :) welcome to california!
